The unexpected passing of Whitney Houston on the night before the Grammys in 2012 came as a profound shock to many, though it wasn’t completely unforeseen.
This exceptionally talented, platinum-selling singer and actress possessed one of the most remarkable voices ever heard, yet her career was no longer at its former glory. Decades of strenuous living had taken a toll on her voice that once echoed perfection. She had weathered numerous storms, such as a turbulent marriage and a highly publicized divorce, but her loved ones remained concerned about her well-being.
Despite this, she remained an influential figure in the music industry who was scheduled to appear at Clive Davis’s annual Pre-Grammy Gala, which took place on February 11, 2012, at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
Instead, unfortunately, a 48-year-old individual tragically drowned in an upstairs bathroom tub prior to the event, turning it into an unplanned tribute. The loss of an artist who infused so much vitality into every note, who poured so much of herself into each performance, was undeniably heartbreaking— and Davis was deeply saddened, having known Houston since she was 19.
Three years after the tragic death of her sole child, Bobbi Kristina Brown, at the tender age of 22, there was no more poignant ending to Houston’s narrative.
It was chilling to notice that the situations surrounding their deaths seemed strikingly alike: Bobbi Kristina, who should have celebrated her 32nd birthday on March 4, unfortunately didn’t recover consciousness after being found unconscious in a bathtub filled with water, much like her mother Whitney Houston.
However, the striking similarities grew progressively powerful as more facts emerged concerning Bobbi Kristina’s later years.
During the 15-year span of Houston’s marriage to Bobby Brown, the final years were clouded by the distorted perspective brought on by their reality show “Being Bobby Brown”. It became increasingly difficult to determine who influenced whom in their lives. Initially, many believed that her downfall was due to her husband, but it should be noted that she had a history of drug use even before her union with Brown, including during the pinnacle of her career success.
So, it turned out they had struggled together, hand in hand.
Brown stated in the 2022 A&E documentary Biography: Bobby Brown, as reported by Fox News, that “Few people were privy to what was happening.” He also mentioned that “Many people weren’t aware of how those accusations impacted me. Many people didn’t understand the situation. They weren’t in our shoes, sharing our experiences or emotions. They merely speculated about what they thought was transpiring. However, the reality is, they had little insight into what was truly happening.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’ve had the chance to observe relationships that have stood the test of time and adversity, much like the one between Brown and Houston. Our paths crossed in 1989, and we officially became partners in 1992. For fifteen years, I stood by his side through various trials, including rehabilitation, legal troubles, car accidents, imprisonment, and a host of other challenges. Throughout it all, our bond endured, albeit our journey together concluded with a divorce in 2007. It’s been reported that there were instances of infidelity on both sides during our relationship.
Brown, who’s been married to Alicia Etheredge since 2012, mentioned that discussing their married life on Biography was beneficial for his marriage. He emphasized the importance of understanding what actions are appropriate and what should be avoided. He expressed that they have a strong marriage, and while Whitney and he had a wonderful relationship in the past, he desires even more positivity in his current life.
Houston often referred to herself as a “functioning addict,” which means her resilience wasn’t as lopsided as it may have appeared at certain moments.
Despite cocaine being mentioned as a possible cause behind her drowning, Brown, a father of five, disagreed with the idea that drugs were the reason for her death. He lost his son Bobby Brown Jr. to an accidental overdose in 2020.
In 2018, when speaking to Rolling Stone, he shared that she had been putting in a lot of effort to become sober. When asked about factors contributing to her demise, the New Edition singer responded simply, “Just the pain of a broken heart.
In the autopsy report, it was mentioned that a substance resembling white crystals was discovered in Houston’s hotel room, together with an opened bottle of champagne, food, and various personal belongings.
The autopsy report identified the primary cause of death as accidental drowning, but also noted that atherosclerotic heart disease and recent cocaine use appeared to have significantly increased the risk of drowning. Additionally, tests revealed small amounts of Benadryl, Xanax, marijuana, and Flexeril (a muscle relaxant) in her body.
At the age of 18, Bobbi Kristina found herself grieving the loss of her mother. Later that same evening, she was admitted to the hospital following a distressing incident where she combined wine and Xanax.
Similarly, she also harbored dreams of becoming a singer, much like Whitney, being from a family deeply involved in show business. However, unlike Whitney who benefited from her mother’s immense talent, she found herself bereft of the seven-time Grammy winner’s backing and mentorship.
In much the same vein as my beloved mother, Bobbi Kristina found herself grappling with substance abuse issues at some stage in her life. She also became entangled in a relationship that, while open to interpretation, many believe contributed significantly to her ultimate demise. It’s unfortunate to say the least, but the level of toxicity is a topic open for discussion among her family and close associates, with them firmly convinced that it was this toxic relationship that ultimately took her life.
Initially, her relationship with Nick Gordon, whom she had taken in as a child and treated like a brother to Bobbi Kristina when he was just 12 years old, appeared harmonious. In fact, during the 2012 Grammys weekend, he accompanied Houston’s group in Los Angeles.
Last summer, when the reality show The Houstons: On Our Own aired, I proudly declared my engagement to Bobbi Kristina. But then we took a step back, stating we were just close friends as always. Yet, destiny seemed to have other plans. In 2013, Bobbi Kristina expressed on Facebook, “I’m fed up with people saying ‘eww, you’re engaged to your brother,’ or ‘if Whitney was still alive, would we be together or would she approve of this?'” It seems our love story is not just a regular one.
In January 2014, it was stated that they were married, however, this wasn’t true as later revealed. Bobbi Kristina’s estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him for allegedly taking money from her bank accounts (Gordon has never been arrested or charged with any crime related to her death).
Prior to his death on January 1, 2020, at the age of 30 from a heroin overdose, Gordon expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Bobbi Kristina. According to one of his friends, who testified during legal proceedings against him, Bobbi Kristina was known to use marijuana frequently, possibly crack cocaine as well, and also had a history of using heroin.
Back in 2015, Alex Reid, a good friend of Bobbi Kristina, shared with TopMob News that Bobbi Kristina was living in constant dread due to Nick’s alleged abusive and controlling behavior.
According to Alex, Krissy found herself detached from the entire family, which made her utterly reliant on Nick for all aspects of her life. Essentially, she was only with Nick and had no one else.
On January 17, 2015, the biopic “Whitney,” directed by Angela Bassett (who also starred with her in “Waiting to Exhale”), debuted on Lifetime. However, this wasn’t a television event that the Houston family enthusiastically anticipated.
Despite garnering more favorable critiques than most Lifetime star biographies, Pat Houston had expressed earlier that they were anticipating a negative outcome.
One must be cautious not to ignore others, as it can happen unintentionally. However, the well-being of Whitney’s family is crucial. This is a perspective that Pat, married to Houston’s brother Gary, expressed on WhitneyHouston.com. As we have been present for every emotion Whitney experienced from her birth until her passing, our family has a unique connection and understanding of her legacy. Therefore, it is valid for us to feel strongly about her memory. We exist. We endure. It’s puzzling why there wasn’t an attempt to reach out to me, Gary, Cissy [Whitney’s mom], or even Whitney’s own daughter.
I can’t help but wonder why only certain family members are getting an early glimpse of the movie? It’s particularly tough, given that we’re approaching another season of mourning, so close to Whitney’s anniversary. This is a letdown any fan or admirer like us would rather not experience.
On January 27, 2015, Bobbi Kristina suffered a car accident when she lost control of her Jeep Liberty, colliding with two other vehicles. Simultaneously, there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest due to her absence from a court hearing concerning a minor traffic offense.
Four days passed, and a friend discovered her unresponsive in a filled bathtub, her head underwater, at the Atlanta-area condominium they shared with Gordon.
For approximately six months, she remained unconscious or unresponsive, and she passed away at a hospice center on July 26, 2015.
A year passed before the autopsy findings were unsealed, following a request from a local news station. Once they were revealed, it became known that Houston and Brown’s sole child together had succumbed to a mix of drowning and drug overdose. Tests on her remains detected traces of marijuana, alcohol, cocaine remnants, morphine, and a medication for both sedation and anxiety treatment in her body.
In the investigation conducted by the Fulton County medical examiner, it proved difficult to determine if the woman’s demise was an unintentional incident or not, and if the presence of morphine suggested she was a frequent user of opiates like heroin.
Simultaneously, Gordon asserted that they were making efforts to rebuild their lives prior to Bobbi Kristina’s accident. However, in a startling allegation that could not be verified independently, it was claimed that she had been deeply saddened following the loss of two pregnancies.
In an interview with the Daily Mail in April 2016, he expressed regret that they hadn’t planned for a child yet and her young, vulnerable state had taken a heavy toll on her. He clarified that he didn’t believe Bobbi Kristina intended to harm herself. Instead, he shared that they aspired to get sober, settle down, marry, and eventually start a family together.
On that day, I regret not reaching Krissy in time. It’s not fair for me to blame myself for another addict’s struggle with addiction, but I can’t help feeling like I let her down. Sadly, she didn’t survive…I wish things had turned out differently for her, that she could have taken my place in rehab. I failed to safeguard her as I should have, even if it was from herself.
According to Gordon, it’s said that the day prior to Whitney Houston’s passing at the Beverly Hilton, Bobbi Kristina dozed off in a bathtub within her own room, with the water still flowing. It was reportedly Whitney who prevented a tragic incident by rescuing her from this situation.
“Whitney found her, pulled her out and slept in her bed that night,” he said.
Back in September 2016, I found myself facing a tragic situation: the death of Bobbi Kristina. A judge ruled in favor of the plaintiffs after several missed court appearances on my part, leading to a ruling that I was liable for her demise. Two months later, I was ordered to compensate her estate a substantial sum of $36 million. However, this legal triumph proved more symbolic than substantive, leaving a bitter taste in its wake.
Brown, the founder of Bobbi Kristina Serenity House, a charity aimed at preventing domestic abuse, stated earlier in the year to ABC News, “I don’t find it mysterious what happened to my daughter. The same events that occurred with Whitney also took place…There was only one individual who claims to have been present during both incidents, and unfortunately, they didn’t fulfill their protective duties.
Five years after her passing in July 2020, Brown posted on Instagram: “I can’t find the words to express my feelings. You’re deeply missed, sweet child. Every day, you remain in my thoughts and heart as a cherished memory, daddy loves you endlessly.
In the 2022 Biography documentary, Brown expressed his thoughts on losing two of his children, saying, “I urge parents to keep a close eye on their kids, their friends, and anyone else around them. Life is tough, and it can be unpredictable. It’s crucial to be aware of what they’re going through because life often brings unexpected challenges. Remember, life isn’t always easy. Children are dealing with hardships. Let’s make time to listen to them, share our own experiences, so they know they’re not facing these struggles alone.

At the age of 22, she remained in a medically-induced coma for several months before ultimately passing away on July 26th, 2015.
