At The Residence, they honored the memory of the late actor Andre Braugher, who was set to appear alongside others in the Netflix mystery-comedy. Unfortunately, he passed away during filming.
Known primarily for his role as Captain Holt in the popular cop comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, this actor has also made significant appearances in other shows and films such as Homicide: Life on the Street, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, She Said, and The Good Fight.
In “The Residence,” the character AB Wynter, a long-serving and calm White House Chief Usher, was supposed to appear as the central murder victim. However, he is shown not just once, but repeatedly in the story through flashbacks, which are presented from different points of view.
A previously unseen picture (shown below) captures Braugher in conversation with fellow cast members Uzo Aduba and Randall Park during a preliminary script reading for their series, The Residence.
Halfway through the first season, filming was done when the 2023 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strike forced a halt in production, which lasted for much of that year.
On January 2nd, 2024, the team was scheduled to resume filming, but regrettably, Braugher unexpectedly passed away on December 11th, 2023, at the young age of 61.
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself eagerly awaiting the resumption of filming for “The Residence,” only to learn that it was pushed back to the following month. However, this delay brought exciting news: Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in “Better Call Saul” and “The Mandalorian,” would be stepping into the shoes once filled by Braugher in our beloved cast.
It wasn’t the first occasion where Esposito replaced Braugher in a TV production. Following his departure from the role of Detective Frank Pembleton, Esposito stepped into the character of FBI agent Michael Giardello on Homicide: Life on the Street.
In the year 2000, the two characters were destined to meet in the full-length conclusion movie titled “Homicide.
At the time of his casting, Esposito expressed his immense pride and deep honor in joining the cast of “Shondaland’s The Residence,” as he will be taking on a role that he greatly admired, respected, and cherished – Andre Braugher’s character.
Having the chance to honor him by creating something wonderful alongside this fantastic group of people will help enlarge his legacy, touching everyone who cherished him deeply.
The season finale of The Residence ends with a card that reads: “In memory of Andre Braugher”.
