Heartstopper and Doctor Who fans celebrate David Tennant cameo as worlds collide

As a lifelong fan of Doctor Who and a recent devotee of Heartstopper, I must say that this crossover has made my geeky heart sing! Being a child of the Tennant era, I’ve always held a soft spot for the Tenth Doctor, so seeing Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring watching an episode from those years was nothing short of delightful.

Fans didn’t anticipate this unexpected blend, yet it’s been warmly welcomed by the followers of Doctor Who and Heartstopper alike.

In the latest Heartstopper season on Netflix, fans have been talking about a scene featuring Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). Keen viewers noticed that this adorable couple spent their Christmas celebrations by re-watching Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride in episode 5 of season 3.

In 2006, an installment of the lengthy sci-fi series introduced David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. This was significant because Tate’s character, who had first appeared in the Christmas episode, now became a companion to the Doctor. She was seen inside the TARDIS, dressed in a wedding gown.

Although the brief moment from Heartstopper left many viewers wanting more, fans are thrilled about the blend of romance and sci-fi, as one fan exclaimed on platform X: “I shouted so loud, they’re watching an old David Tennant Doctor Who episode for Christmas – this is perfect!

One person, a Whovian, expressed that this made their heart feel warm. Another enthusiastic fan confessed that they were so thrilled they needed to take a moment to gather their thoughts.

The addition of Yasmin Finney, who played a role in the Doctor’s 60th anniversary specials as Rose’s daughter, to the latest Heartstopper season is particularly appropriate.

For the upcoming 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special, the trailer hinted at the resurrection of Finney’s character, Rose. Showrunner Russell T Davies expressed his enthusiasm for her return by stating, “She’s fantastic, and we have more scenes together planned because I genuinely enjoy working with her.

Furthermore, it’s noteworthy that the similarities don’t just end there, for enthusiasts of Alice Oseman’s initial graphic novels have pointed out an interesting detail: Nick has consistently been portrayed as having a crush on David Tennant throughout the comics. Therefore, fans of the original publications can expect to find this inclusion in the series particularly delightful.

During a recent chat on the TopMob Podcast, Kit Connor shared which Doctor Who period he prefers, and unsurprisingly, it was when David Tennant steered the show.

Connor mentioned that there are a few shows he’s watched extensively over the years. Interestingly, one of these is Doctor Who, which has had a significant impact on him since his childhood.

I frequently revisit the seasons featuring David Tennant. I enjoy Matt Smith too, and sometimes I’ll explore his episodes as well. However, the David Tennant period remains my favorite.

According to the official summary for season 3: “Charlie intends to express his love for Nick, while Nick has a significant message for Charlie as well. As summer vacation concludes and time swiftly moves forward, their friendship group starts to grasp that the upcoming school year will bring a mix of joy and hardships.
