Heartstopper stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke are on this week’s Radio Times

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for coming-of-age stories and a soft spot for progressive representations of the LGBTQ+ community, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming release of Heartstopper. Having navigated my own adolescence without such a heartwarming series, I can only imagine the comfort and joy it will bring to today’s youth.

During the sports-filled summer, many viewers lamented a lack of captivating TV dramas, beyond the live action of the Paris Olympics. I’m thrilled to inform you that we will soon share all the shows that broadcasters and streaming services have prepared for autumn, allowing you to build your anticipation towards Christmas with some exceptional television programming.

At TopMob, everyone is just as thrilled as you will be about the outstanding performances and narratives that are soon gracing our screens over the following two months. With a selection of 25 dramas to pick from, the question becomes which one should we feature on our cover? Let me hand it over to deputy previews editor David Brown to share his thoughts on Heartstopper…

Alice Oseman’s coming-of-age drama has gained a unique status in today’s bustling television landscape – it has evolved into a genuine TV sensation. This isn’t surprising, given that the heartwarming love story between high school students Charlie (played by Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) is both endearing and an unquestionably progressive portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships.

Heartstopper doesn’t just focus on conflict like most dramas do; instead, it emphasizes friendship, encouragement, and positivity. This makes viewers feel more confident about themselves. It has captivated not only teenagers but also adults, many of whom wish they had a show like this during their own adolescence.

As a movie enthusiast myself, David’s infectious excitement about this particular series played a significant role in our choice. However, there are numerous other captivating dramas to discover as well! For instance, we’ve got Prof Brian Cox discussing space travel and his dreams of a lunar vacation. Gyles Brandreth is diving into the intricacies of the English language and lost words. Lastly, Jess Gillam shares insights on the BBC Young Musician competition. Just like our drama guide, I believe there’s something engaging for every taste!
