As a longtime fan of Heartstopper, I eagerly await the return of Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson in season 3. The insight provided by Joe Locke and Kit Connor about their approach to filming sex scenes for this upcoming season has me even more excited. It’s refreshing to hear that they are keeping the show’s heartfelt, optimistic tone while tackling mature themes, rather than veering into the overly sexualized territory of shows like Euphoria.
In the upcoming third season of Heartstopper, actors Joe Locke and Kit Connor will reprise their roles as Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson respectively. Unlike the TV series “Euphoria” on HBO, this new season won’t focus on sex in a similar graphic or intense manner.
In their latest conversation on the TopMob Podcast, they were inquired about the method behind capturing intimate scenes for the upcoming season.
Locke stated that they had an exceptional intimacy coordinator named David who was incredibly skillful in making everyone feel comfortable. They essentially planned their interactions like a dance routine, but using various sexual poses instead, which he found amusing.

Connor went on to say: “Our encounters with intimacy are more reminiscent of Heartstopper. They don’t transform into the intensity of Euphoria overnight. Instead, we maintain an optimistic and breezy attitude towards it.
“I think we really focus on the difficulties of knowing when one is ready and what that might feel like and what it is to be a young queer person. Because there isn’t as much representation in the industry of queer sex.
Much of the portrayal of non-straight sexual activity is quite explicit and intense, if I may use a less technical term.
Connor continued, “I believe we’re portraying characters that are discovering themselves, others, and their wants, much like young individuals would. However, we’re not presenting it in a sensual or provocative manner.
They’re adolescents, you understand. We portray their relationship as quite heartwarming – it’s about these youths discovering and nurturing their feelings for one another in unique and tender ways.
From my perspective, I’d say that’s an accurate description. It’s a delicate, non-erotic portrayal, more about intimacy than explicitness. However, given the subject matter, some viewers might interpret it as sensual or even sexual, regardless of the filmmaker’s intent.
However, I believe this method is quite effective in handling sex scenes and sexual storylines, ensuring the characters aren’t overly sexualized.

According to Locke, it certainly seemed more comfortable and natural to film those scenes due to the established trust with his co-star Connor.
Performing a intimate scene can feel quite exposed when surrounded by strangers you’re not close with. Having your partner in this situation be someone familiar and trustworthy, who shares the same vulnerability, significantly lessens the discomfort.
In reference to the depiction of sexual relationships in Heartstopper’s third installment, its creator, Alice Oseman, added: “There seems to be a lot of discussion surrounding the fact that Heartstopper now includes intimate scenes.
People seem quite surprised, but I agree with your point – it’s indeed valuable for younger generations to witness a couple who don’t jump straight into sexual relationships. Instead, they take time to get to know each other first.

Social norms, conversations with friends, online content, and popular media all seem to suggest that sexual activity is expected of them at a young age.
However, Heartstopper, it seems Nick and Charlie’s story might unfold a bit more gradually, which I find quite refreshing as an alternative perspective for younger audiences. In the third season, the narrative surrounding intimacy appears to center heavily on the emotional aspects of the experience.
Oseman stated: “The characters are inquiring about matters such as, for instance, ‘Am I prepared for sexual activity?’, ‘How can I tell if my partner is also ready?’, ‘What if it becomes awkward and embarrassing because I’m unsure of myself?’ These are typical questions that teenagers might ask when dealing with sex, and I hope it resonates with many young people.
“The official summary for season three indicates that Charlie wants to express his love for Nick, while Nick has something significant to share with Charlie as well. As summer vacation ends and the months speed by, the friends become aware that the upcoming school year will bring both its pleasures and difficulties.
As they grow closer and discuss future plans such as social gatherings, university decisions, and deepening their connections, it’s essential for everyone to rely on their loved ones when unexpected challenges arise in life.
