Heimdall’s Shocking New Afterlife Revealed in MCU Twist

In the comic book “Immortal Thor,” written by Al Ewing and Jan Bazaluda, we find an innovative take on the classic Thor tales. While previous comics have often drawn inspiration from Norse mythology, they’ve typically taken a sensationalized approach, sticking to the fundamentals but veering off course. “Immortal Thor” is different, as it uses Norse legends to narrate the story of Thor’s demise. The 22nd issue of this series continues this narrative.

Thor and Skurge have joined forces to enter Utgard, a realm resembling the Norse Pantheon but with its own dark shadow. Thor has already vanquished Toranos, the Utgard Thor, but Utgard Loki presents a more formidable challenge, wielding magic unlike anything Thor has faced before. This encounter lands them in a predicament – an endless labyrinth city known as Nrgl. Here, they encounter Hermod, one of Thor’s missing brothers who was previously absent from the series. Hermod provides some intriguing news about a deity who has been gone for some time – Heimdall, portrayed by Idris Elba in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In modern times, Heimdall has garnered quite a following, largely due to Elba’s captivating portrayal. Historically, Heimdall has held a significant position in Marvel’s Asgard, standing guard at the Rainbow Bridge and barring unauthorized access. However, his storyline in the MCU has intertwined with that of his character, leading to an unusual afterlife for the Asgardians.

Heimdall Decided to go On a Different Journey

Heimdall’s duty as guardian of the Bifrost marked his loyal service to Odin and Thor throughout his years. Unlike some lesser gods such as Baldur who occasionally ascended to Odin’s throne, Heimdall preferred to maintain his post on the Bifrost, serving as Asgard’s initial defense. Known for his bravery in battle, Heimdall delighted in fighting off enemies of Asgard. Essentially, he was a one-dimensional character who carried out his responsibilities admirably. After Ragnarok, Thor found him and Heimdall resumed his role as the watchman of Asgard. He foresaw Norman Osborn’s invasion of Asgard but Loki prevented him from alerting anyone. For years, he valiantly defended the realm of Odin and Thor, playing a crucial part in unmasking Toranus, who briefly took Thor’s place following one of his deaths. Heimdall engaged in battles against Mangog and during “War of the Realms,” he joined forces to recover the original Valkyrie’s sword with Jane Foster. Tragically, Bullseye fatally wounded him with that same sword, but he lingered long enough to persuade Jane to destroy it, enabling her to defeat Bullseye. Rather than journeying to Valhalla, Heimdall chose to travel to the Far Shore instead.

His journey took him to the realms of Utgard and Nrgl. Utgard was fashioned by Utgard Loki during the conflicts among the Primordial Deities, serving as a refuge for those who evaded Demogorge – Utgard Loki, Toranos, Nrgl, Kemur, and Mejed included. It is also inhabited by the enigmatic Those Who Sit Above In Shadow. The discovery of Utgard in the vast cosmos by Heimdall, a feat never achieved during explorations of the afterlife, lends an air of terror to this place that was previously unknown. Though it has always been a dark reflection of the ancient universe where vengeful plots were hatched, the possibility of the deceased ending up there adds a new dimension to the powers wielded by Utgard Loki and the other gods of Utgard over the mortal realms.

Utgard Keeps Getting Scarier

In his extensive lifetime, Heimdall possessed a unique perspective on time and space, serving as guardian of the Bifrost within the realms of Asgard. Given his long-standing duty spanning countless millennia, it’s understandable that Heimdall yearned to venture beyond the confines of these Ten Realms. After all, a god like Heimdall deserved to explore new horizons following his tireless protection of Asgard and its inhabitants.

However, tumbling into the abyss of Utgard was an unexpected twist that Heimdall likely never anticipated.

Utgard’s location in the universe is vague at best, not belonging to the Ten Realms, nor any other known cosmic territories such as Death’s Realm. Heimdall discovering it beyond the Far Shore requires traversing a vast rift in the very fabric of existence, transforming a realm of darkness into something else. Utgard can be seen as a cosmic predator, influenced by the dark beings dwelling within it.
