Helicopter Crashes into Hudson River, Leaving At Least 5 Dead in Tragic Incident

Several people have died in a helicopter crash in New York City.

On April 10, NBC News reported that they received information from the Fire Department of New York City about a helicopter in the Hudson River at approximately 3:15 pm local time. The helicopter, believed to be a tourist helicopter, had six people on board, and at least four are confirmed dead according to three high-ranking officials from New Jersey and New York law enforcement agencies.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) verified the helicopter crash, acknowledging it was a Bell 206 model. In a subsequent statement, they mentioned that they are currently collaborating with the National Transportation Safety Board in investigating this unfortunate incident.

A minimum of four individuals were rescued from the water as the helicopter landed close to the Holland Tunnel exhaust vent on the New Jersey bank of the Hudson River, reports suggest, based on information from three high-ranking law enforcement officers. The health status of these individuals remains uncertain.

Footage posted online depicted a helicopter submerged and apparently upside-down in a river. Avi Rakesh, who shared video from the crash location on platform X, stated that he observed the helicopter flying southbound toward New Jersey when suddenly, one of its blades detached.

Rakesh shared with NBC News that he’s unsure about the cause, but the tail of whatever it was simply fell off, a short distance from the Holland Tunnel.

The FDNY said their land marine units are executing rescue operations.

Back in 2019, a helicopter met with an accident by plunging into the Hudson River just a short while after it had departed from New York City. It was subsequently disclosed that the pilot sustained only minor wounds to his hand, according to NBC News.

Back in 2009, a light airplane had a tragic crash with a helicopter used for sightseeing over the Hudson River. Regrettably, this incident resulted in the loss of lives of all nine individuals on board both vehicles.
