Hell of a Summer Trailer: Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard Directs & Stars In New Horror Film

NEON has unveiled the uncensored preview for the upcoming blend of slasher, horror, and comedy titled “Hell of a Summer“, helmed by “Stranger Things” stars Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk in their directorial debuts. In the spotlight is Fred Hechinger (“Kraven the Hunter”, “Gladiator II”, “The White Lotus”), portraying 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg, who grapples with his disconnection from his teenage colleagues at Camp Pineway. Unbeknownst to him, a mysterious killer is terrorizing the campgrounds, claiming the lives of counselors one by one. The ensemble cast also includes Wolfhard, Bryk, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Baker, and Adam Palley. “Hell of a Summer” premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival to positive reviews and is set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025.

The latest production titled “Hell of a Summer” has the duo, Wolfhard and Bryk, who were previously seen in the movie “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (2021) and Jesse Eisenberg’s drama “When You Finish Saving the World” (2022). In 2020, Bryk was part of the crime comedy short “Night Shifts“, which was written and directed by Wolfhard. Interestingly, “Hell of a Summer” marks the first full-length directorial efforts for both Wolfhard and Byrk.

The duo has their upcoming project all planned out; they revealed in November that they will collaborate on a modern take of the teen horror comedy “Idle Hands”, which Sony Pictures will distribute. This film, released in 1999, starred Devon Sawa, Seth Green, Elden Henson, and Jessica Alba, and has maintained a devoted fanbase since its debut more than two decades ago. Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and Gavin Byk will jointly pen the script and are rumored to also direct. Jason Reitman, who directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and co-wrote “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, is set to produce this remake.

When the announcement was made, Reitman shared with Variety, “Finn and Billy did an outstanding job in their directorial debut and have a fresh perspective on Idle Hands that resonates with a disillusioned generation. We’re thrilled to back them as they translate their unique vision onto the screen and bring forth the demons.

In a recent collaboration, Bryk, Wolfhard, and Reitman have teamed up again for Reitman’s 2024 docudrama titled “Saturday Night,” which is now available for rental or purchase on Amazon Prime Video. This year also marks the final appearance of Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler in the upcoming fifth season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” set to premiere in 2025. The first four seasons of this popular series, which were wrapped up in production by December, can be streamed on Netflix.
