Helldivers 2 developers embrace holiday spirit of giving — some Killzone crossover content will now be entirely free

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen numerous instances of developers listening to their community and making necessary adjustments. The recent move by Arrowhead Game Studios to make the Killzone 2 crossover content free for all Helldivers 2 players is a prime example of this.

The super-planet known as “Super Earth” has taken note of the grievances expressed by its Helldiver inhabitants, and modifications are being made in response to their concerns during the recent update to its arsenal.

The developers of Helldivers 2 have announced some modifications to their crossover event with Killzone 2, in response to player feedback about the pricing structure. Previously, the Killzone content was much pricier than typical Warbonds and could not be obtained using in-game currency. However, starting today, the second half of the event’s items will now be offered completely free for all players.

In a recent announcement, we shared that we’ve released our first collaboration product. We’ve been gathering feedback from our community surveys, and it seems that crossover content is something many of you have been eagerly waiting for! However, we understand that some of you are not satisfied with the pricing of the items. Rest assured, we will be taking another look at this matter.

Originally only accessible for purchase for a short span of five days (a brief period even by limited-time event standards in other service games), the availability of the crossover content is being extended, giving players an extra 5 days to choose from the offerings made by Stahl Arms in the Superstore. At this time, there are no specific details, but Arrowhead’s update does mention that they are exploring options for making these items a permanent feature in the store.

Analysis: Gathering feedback for the future?

In a unique move, this crossover occasion unites Guerrilla Games’ previously inactive first-person shooter series for the first time, merging it with Arrowhead’s highly acclaimed cooperative shooter game that is associated with another PlayStation intellectual property.

It’s truly impressive when cross-content is implemented in an engaging manner, and I commend Arrowhead for being transparent about their learning process from this experience. The game frequently receives numerous free updates (like the latest exciting addition of the Illuminate faction), so it seems reasonable that crossover items and skins are paid, but a balance must be maintained.

I’m wondering what might be coming up next in this crossover, preferably something reminiscent of the Helghast, that seamlessly blends with the universe and atmosphere of Helldivers. To me, introducing Resistance seems ideal, given there are no plans for a new game. It would add excitement if we could engage with Chimera enemies in this scenario too.

Helldivers 2, released this year, currently ranks third in U.S. sales by November and has garnered accolades for its Best Ongoing title and Best Multiplayer categories at the 2024 Game Awards. However, a minor issue with PlayStation network logins caused some initial trouble. But with fresh content now available, players are once again engaged in their battle against the Illuminate.

At its launch, when I initially assessed Helldivers 2, I noted that “I’ve enjoyed countless cooperative and multiplayer games over the past decade, but it’s been quite some time since a cooperative experience has captivated me this much. Now, I can’t wait for any opportunity to play again. Each session seems to uncover a fresh aspect of the game, which is an impressive feat for a title based on a mission structure that appears straightforward.

Helldivers 2 is currently available on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
