Helldivers 2 director confirms plans to step away from the company on sabbatical

Johan Pilestedt, who directed the hit game Helldivers 2 last year, has revealed on X platform that he will be taking some time off in 2025.

The news emerged nearly a year following the game’s release, however, the work by Pilestedt dates much further back – all the way to the initial launch of Helldivers.

The second in the Helldivers series released on 8th February last year, and it quickly blew up.

During the initial month, the servers struggled to accommodate the influx of players eager to play. Evidently, the developers had not anticipated such a positive response.

Beyond being highly praised and well-received, it also accumulated several accolades. Among these are the titles of Best Multiplayer Game and Critics’ Choice Award at the Golden Joystick Awards, as well as the Best Multiplayer Game award at The Game Awards.

As a dedicated gamer, I can understand why Pilestedt felt the need to step back. Running a game of this magnitude requires a tremendous amount of effort and dedication. It makes sense that he would want to take some time off to rest and recharge.

In his blog about X, he mentioned that although you’ve been playing @helldivers2 for nearly a year, he’s been deeply immersed in it since early 2016. Furthermore, he’s been part of the @HelldiversGame community since as far back as 2013.

He further explains that “for the past 11 years, I’ve been dedicating all hours to the same project, which unfortunately meant sacrificing time with my family, friends, my wonderful spouse, and even myself.

In order to make up for the backing I’ve received throughout a decade, I’m about to step aside and work diligently for a while.

But for those worrying about Helldivers 2 in his absence, fear not.

I’m confidently saying that my pals over at Arrowhead Games are working tirelessly right now, aiming to bring some jaw-dropping content to Hell Divers 2.

The post concludes with a hint, as Pilestedt mentions: “Upon my return, I will begin developing the next Arrowhead game.

Many fans will wonder what that is, or when development will begin.

During this time, we won’t have an answer for your initial query. However, we can provide some information: Pilestedt’s absence is expected to last anywhere from a month up to about five months.

He won’t be gone for long, and we can’t wait to see what he and the Arrowhead team will do next!
