Ever since Arrowhead Game Studios unexpectedly introduced the Illuminate faction in their hit co-op shooter Helldivers 2 for Windows PC and PS5 in December, it’s been an intriguing game of hide-and-seek between these squid-like aliens and Lady Liberty’s elite soldiers. The Illuminate have launched surprise attacks on Super Earth colonies, turning democratic citizens into mindless Voteless zombies to reinforce their own ranks. However, as soon as the troops arrive to push them back, the aliens disappear only to reappear elsewhere. It seems that this alien threat may be preparing for a more sinister scheme in the near future.
On Monday, players encountered a new feature on their spaceship’s Galactic Map: a Spacetime Fluctuation Indicator, which is designed to monitor mysterious disturbances in spacetime. Although the indicator itself doesn’t clarify its final objective, reading the latest intelligence report from Super Earth High Command in the dispatch menu reveals it’s intended for tracking Illuminate activity.
Several space observatories have detected unusual gravitational disturbances and orbital irregularities among celestial bodies. These anomalies, referred to as ‘spacetime ripples,’ are associated with Illuminate activities according to recent findings. In response, the Defense and Science Ministries have joined forces to monitor these phenomena more closely. The resulting data will be incorporated into all galactic maps for public viewing.
So far, the Indicator hasn’t detected any sudden increases in readings that are characteristic of the Illuminate’s typical hit-and-run maneuvers, and it remains unaffected when you gaze at or teleport to an active battleground involving the Illuminate. However, I anticipate it will start making sounds like beeping and whirring once the faction begins the next phase of their broader plan, a plan we are aware is imminent due to a recent Major Order alert.
The Illuminate continue to elude us. It’s clear that a greater plan is unfolding, though its details remain unseen for now,” they remarked after the Helldivers failed to fend off multiple Illuminate attacks. “We won’t rest easy until the Illuminate are pursued and eradicated, ensuring the safety of Super Earth’s inhabitants.
It’s no wonder that players are buzzing about the Indicator on social platforms such as the r/Helldivers subreddit, where a post titled “WHAT IS THIS?” has quickly become one of the most popular posts of the week with over 15,000 upvotes and 1,000 comments. The exact intentions of Illuminate following our ongoing skirmishes remain unclear, but many speculate that a massive galaxy-wide invasion may be imminent, given this new indicator as a potential hint.
Could we predict when the ominous next move by the Illuminate might occur? It’s uncertain, but there’s an possibility that something significant takes place on February 8 – a date marking the anniversary of Helldivers 2’s release last year. I’m speculating that a new Warbond battle pass featuring fresh equipment (it’s been about two months since the last one) will be introduced, and to test it out, a massive Illuminate assault could follow suit. It’s also possible that new enemy units might be added to the faction, as currently there are only five types available for combat.
Even if we don’t receive a new Warbond (which is unlikely), the Helldivers’ weapon collection is more diverse and balanced than ever before, with almost every weapon, armor set, tactic, and booster being effective against the Illuminate. Moreover, with the almighty Democracy Space Station weapons platform now operational again, allowing players to request massive amounts of artillery and air support, citizens of Super Earth can feel reassured that the Helldivers are well-prepared for the next attack by the squids.
…Right?
Helldivers 2 is a top-notch choice among both PC and PS5 games, especially if you’re a fan of cooperative shooters, high-octane sci-fi action, hilarious physics gags, and witty satire. Usually retailing at $40, it can often be found cheaper with some bargain hunting. Currently, the most favorable deal is offered by CDKeys, which reduces the price by almost $10, making it possible to acquire this explosive game for approximately $30.
