As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that witnessing Henry Cavill‘s transition from Superman to Wolverine (or should I say, Cavillrine) in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It’s like watching a superhero crossover event unfold right before our very eyes!
Lo and behold! It’s not a bird, not a plane, but Henry Cavill’s Superman, who graced our screens (for what seemed like the last time) in a cameo opposite Dwayne Johnson in the 2022 DC film “Black Adam”. The brief scene, followed by Cavill’s declaration on social media that he was returning as Superman, hinted at an upcoming clash of superpowers between the Man of Steel and the Man in Black. However, with the transformation of DC Films into DC Studios, the demise of the DC Extended Universe, and a new cast led by David Corenswet taking over as the new Superman, it appears Cavill’s return may have been short-lived.
In keeping with the theme, Marvel Studios’ movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine – reviving characters from dormant franchises – showcases the previous Superman actor, transitioning from the DCEU to the MCU. At the outset of the film, as Ryan Reynolds’ character Wade Wilson searches the multiverse for a living version of Hugh Jackman’s Logan to stabilize his dying universe, he encounters “Cavillrine” – a Wolverine analogue who is a clear stand-in for Henry Cavill, the actor known for playing Superman and Justice League.
In a nod to their rivals, Deadpool casually remarks, “It simply seems fitting. We’re going to give you far superior treatment compared to those rascals across the way.”
In most cases, it was either Ryan or myself who contacted the actors directly for unexpected roles in the movie, before any legal or agent negotiations took place, according to director Shawn Levy in an interview with Variety. Essentially, we’d ask, and more often than not, the response was a positive one.
“Cavill is included, who has been referred to as ‘Cavillrine,’ a name coined by Ryan. Levy stated, “I immediately recognized it as unquestionable when Ryan came up with this term. He agreed because he knew it would be both rebellious and fun-loving. It was also an affectionate nod to him and his body of work in DC comics, especially since he’s now portraying a Marvel character variant.”
Partially covert due to fan enthusiasm for a British actor taking on a new Marvel character not previously featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain Britain, the vigilante in a Union Jack uniform representing the United Kingdom.
In a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill stated, “I won’t say I’d play a Marvel character that someone else is currently portraying because everyone is doing fantastic work. But, I’ve noticed whispers about Captain Britain online, and the idea of bringing a fresh, contemporary take on that character would be quite thrilling.”
In addition, Cavill remarked, “There’s a certain charm to it,” and I must admit, I have a soft spot for being British… or Canadian.
