The remake of “Highlander” is gaining traction at last, approximately twenty years following its initial conception and four years after Henry Cavill was given the lead role. On Thursday, it was announced that the production will be shifting to Amazon MGM Studios and beginning soon. Alongside Cavill, key figures such as director Chad Stahelski and screenwriter Michael Finch remain involved in the project. According to reports, the film is slated for a theatrical release; however, some sources are suggesting it may debut in 2026, though Amazon has not confirmed this date as of yet.
The initial 1986 film “Highlander” became a cult favorite, yet as it gained more recognition following its debut, it sparked five sequel movies and a TV show. However, none of these spin-offs were cherished as much as the original during their respective periods. The last sequel was released in 2007, and whispers about a reboot began in 2008. It wasn’t until 2016 that Chad Stahelski, who gained prominence with his hit movie “John Wick” (released in 2014), became associated with the project.
After that announcement, there have been occasional updates and speculation about the remake. However, substantial progress has been minimal at best. In 2021, Cavill was confirmed for the lead role, while Finch joined in 2023. There were also rumors suggesting Michael Fassbender would portray the antagonist later on. Lionsgate initially spearheaded the movie’s development, but it now appears that Amazon is assuming control over the entire project, with the cast likely to remain mostly unchanged.
The film “Highlander” revolves around a group of individuals who possess immortality, a trait that sets them apart from others. However, their destiny lies in battling each other. These immortals can survive any harm except being decapitated, and they are all called to a predetermined “Gathering.” Here, they engage in competition for a unique prize. During the interim, some seek to eliminate opponents or gain an advantage over others. The film is iconic due to its catchy tagline: “There can only be one.”>
In the initial film version, Christopher Lambert portrayed Connor MacLeod, an immortal character who originated in the Scottish Highlands during the 16th century. His trainer, Ramírez, was embodied by Sean Connery, while his adversary, Kurgan, was brought to life by Clancy Brown. Despite its disappointing box office performance, the film’s enduring impact is evident.
It’d be great if the remake surpasses the original film as well as its subsequent installments. Speaking of Highlander, it’s currently available for streaming on Peacock, Tubi, and Pluto TV. As for the upcoming remake, Amazon MGM Studios are working on it, but an official release date hasn’t been announced yet.
