Henry Cavill’s Highlander Reboot Welcomes Oscar Winner Russell Crowe in Major Role!

Enthusiasts of the iconic movie “Highlander” can look forward with excitement! The remake, featuring Henry Cavill, is set to start filming in Scotland this autumn. Not only that, another Academy Award winner has signed on for the production, which will be helmed by Chad Stahleski, known for his work on the John Wick series. In this reboot, Cavill will step into the role of the title character, the immortal Scottish warrior Connor, a part previously played by Christopher Lambert in the 1986 film. While “Highlander” has produced several sequels and spin-offs, none have matched the success or affection of the original. With this new casting addition for Stahleski and Cavill’s remake, we are optimistic that they will be able to create a version of “Highlander” that surpasses its previous iterations.

Based on Collider reports, the acclaimed actor Russell Crowe has joined the cast of ‘Highlander’ in a significant role. Although we don’t know yet who he will portray, Crowe’s addition adds an exciting action-packed dimension to the film, as well as his Oscar-winning acting abilities. His resume includes notable roles from films such as Gladiator, Master & Commander, Robin Hood, The Nice Guys, and more recently, Kraven the Hunter. With Crowe on board, this long-awaited project is now moving forward, with filming set to start later in 2023 according to directors Stahleski and their team.

Highlander Reteams Cavill and Crowe for the First Time in Over 10 Years

In the 2013 movie “Man of Steel”, directed by Zack Snyder, Crowe and Cavill appeared together. While Cavill portrayed Superman, Crowe brought Jor-El, Superman’s deceased father, to life. The dynamic between their characters could provide a clue about the role Crowe might be playing in “Highlander”. Given their age difference, it’s possible that Crowe will play MacLeod’s mentor, Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, who was played by Sean Connery in the 1986 version of “Highlander”. However, due to his versatile acting skills, Crowe could also take on the role of MacLeod’s adversary, the Kurgan, or even another immortal character, whether from the existing “Highlander” lore or a new creation.

It appears that Stahleski’s grittier, globe-trotting approach, which convinced Cavill to join Highlander, also appealed to Crowe. Earlier, Stahleski mentioned that his focus on exploring MacLeod’s psychology and the torment of living for hundreds of years served as his primary selling point to Cavill.

As a movie enthusiast, I can say that the protagonist is someone who’d rather avoid this predicament at all costs. Yet, we’re treated to a wide range of character development here. This individual has been honing their skills over five centuries and has dabbled in various martial arts, which you get to witness. Stahelski shared this insight with The Direct.

The Highlander series is recognized for its continuous action revolving around an eternal struggle among a group of immortals for a Prize. This Prize encompasses the combined power of all deceased Immortals, supreme knowledge, and the capacity to assume human form. It appears that Stahleski aims to make the Highlander’s fantastical elements more relatable by grounding them in a way that viewers can identify with. His fresh take on the franchise is captivating enough to attract an icon like Crowe to join the project.
