As an ardent advocate for justice and a firm believer in the power of youth, this tragic news about Gerald Andre Lomax, Jr., a promising high school athlete taken too soon, deeply saddens me. Having spent years working with young athletes myself, I can attest to their resilience, spirit, and the unparalleled potential they possess.
A high school football star is dead after a tragic killing.
17-year-old Gerald Andre Lomax, Jr., sustained fatal injuries after being shot inside a vehicle as he departed from a high school basketball game on November 12th. Unfortunately, he passed away the next day, as confirmed by multiple press releases issued by the Birmingham Police Department and reported by TopMob News.
At approximately 9:50 PM local time, the police department in Birmingham, Alabama, responded to a call reporting someone who had been shot. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Lomax, a student athlete at P.D. Jackson-Olin High School, unconscious and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was then transported to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Before the incident occurred, the teen was part of a heated verbal argument as he and a companion were exiting a basketball match, as suggested by the preliminary findings from the police department. Upon trying to depart, an unknown gunman discharged several bullets into their car, hitting Lomax. Consequently, his friend drove them to Woodlawn High School in search of help, as stated in the press releases.
The teen’s mother, Courtney Brown, was by her son’s side in his final moments.
She shared with AL.com that she stayed beside her infant until his final breath, confirming the truth, but she struggles to comprehend it. “He was such a kind soul,” she explained, “yet he never caused harm to anyone.
She also mentioned that she expressed her love for him and her great pride in him. Furthermore, she vowed to look after his siblings.
I’m absolutely hooked on every detail about this tragic homicide case. As of November 15th, there have been no arrests related to the shooting, as Birmingham police informed me. They shared this update with People magazine.
In a video shared on social media platforms, Birmingham City Schools’ superintendent Mark Sullivan appealed to students and their families, asking for their assistance in putting an end to the ongoing violence.
In his Instagram post on November 13th, he emphasized that it’s our responsibility to provide our kids with the most secure setting they can have, and also to offer them the chance for a rich, fulfilling life.
“We want to help them to learn to navigate conflicts by using resolution skills in hopes that it will avoid the loss of life in our schools and in our city,” he continued. “Students, we are here for you, we love you and we encourage you to find a trusted source if you are hurting, angry or need help.”
