As a huge fan of animated series and someone who grew up in New York City, I am beyond excited for the second season of “Hit-Monkey” on Hulu. Creators Will Speck and Josh Gordon have perfectly captured the gritty and timeless essence of my beloved city, blending it with the fantastical world of Hit-Monkey. Their references to classic Scorsese films and the ’70s version of New York City add an extra layer of depth and authenticity to the series.
The creators Speck and Gordon bring back “Hit-Monkey” for a new round on Hulu. In the previous episode, this production wreaked havoc in Tokyo. Now, it’s moving on to New York City for season two.
Gordon shared with ComicBook that he and his partner were natives of New York City, having grown up and attended school there. They aimed to create a darker, timeless portrayal of the city, blending elements of its current state with hints of the 1970s. During the animation process, they drew inspiration from early Scorsese films and other gritty representations of the city from that era.
“Starting in Tokyo ignited our excitement because it perfectly fit the genre’s vibe, evoking feelings of Yakuza Revenge. Our goal was to transport this energy to New York without making it seem out of place. The city offered so many opportunities for fantastical and surprising events, allowing us to flip its norms on their heads and craft a unique mood and atmosphere.”
Fans are quickly connecting the dots between “Hit-Monkey” and the wider Marvel Universe, as New York City has been a common setting for epic battles in MCU productions such as “Iron Man 2,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Avengers,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” With the MCU broadening its horizons into canonical animation via the multiverse through shows like “What If…?” and “X-Men ’97,” speculation about Hit-Monkey’s role in this expanded universe has emerged.
In the real-life MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), things work differently, but our team has been passionate about this character and we’ve imagined bringing it to life in live action. It would be exciting! We started with the belief that animation offered endless possibilities for the character’s development.
Another possibility: Hit-Monkey’s entry into the Marvel universe isn’t limited to live-action adaptations. In comic books, Hit-Monkey interacts with Deadpool on occasion.
I’m a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds and his character Wade Wilson. If given the chance, my team and I would be thrilled to include him in the future seasons of Hit-Monkey, but it’s uncertain if he’s even considered the idea. It’s an intriguing question worth asking, so we need to reach out and find out.
Hit-Monkey Season 2 is now streaming in full on Hulu.
