After nearly two decades with the Today show, the longtime host has tearfully shared she’s stepping away from the news desk.

In a letter published by Today on September 26, she expressed that her time at NBC has been similar to a long-lasting romantic relationship in her career. However, it’s significant because you’ve been with me throughout this twenty-six-year journey. Reflecting on the past, the statistics are astonishing: I spent 26 years at NBC News, including ten years on Dateline, seven years during the seven o’clock hour, and sixteen years during the ten o’clock hour.

She went on, visualizing your features and your loved ones, as well as the countless instances where you’ve uplifted and motivated me. That’s the sound of my heart resonating. Many of my professional connections have blossomed into invaluable friendships.

She reflected, “For some time now, I’ve been pondering if I’m truly prepared — Am I truly ready? However, my sixty-first birthday party on the Plaza seemed like a turning point. It was as if a huge, joyful affirmation came to me: Yes, you are! My broadcast career has been incredibly significant, a new decade of my life is approaching, and now my daughters and mother require a larger portion of my time. I will miss you all dearly, but I am ready and eager.
