Hogwarts Legacy DLC reportedly canceled by WB Games

The unannounced additional content for Hogwarts Legacy, as reported by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, has allegedly been terminated.

According to Schreier, it appears that the planned definitive edition of Hogwarts Legacy, initially intended as an add-on for current gamers, has been scrapped due to the ongoing restructuring happening within Warner Bros. Games.

This Downloadable Content (DLC) would have offered fresh quests for players within the Wizarding World, incorporating material initially intended for the game but later removed during development. Notably, this DLC was a collaborative effort between Avalanche Software, the lead developers of Hogwarts Legacy, and Rocksteady Studios, the team behind Suicide Squad.

As reported by Bloomberg, the release of this DLC was initially planned for late 2025, but it has been partially canceled due to worries that its price might not justify the value it would provide. However, work on a follow-up to Hogwarts Legacy is ongoing, although details about the game remain scarce as it’s still in the early stages of development.

WB Games faces significant challenges

Lately, we’ve seen a string of closures affecting game studios under Warner Bros. Games, with Monolith Productions being one of the recent shutdowns, along with two others. Also, it was announced that the development of Monolith’s forthcoming Wonder Woman game has been halted.

When these studios closed down, Warner Bros. mentioned that they were shifting their attention towards their major franchises such as DC, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. Later on, it was pointed out that when discussing video games based on DC characters, Warner Bros. is mostly talking about Batman internally.

Currently, Rocksteady Studios is making good progress at an early stage of creating a fresh Batman Arkham game, however, it’s likely several years before this game reaches its final form.

2023 marked the debut of Hogwarts Legacy, a game that has since risen to become one of the most financially successful video games ever, with sales exceeding 34 million units worldwide. Not only does it consistently rank among the top-selling games in the United States according to Circana, but it also holds this position on a monthly basis.
