Holo Fans Crave This Official Spice and Wolf Mead Collab

As someone who has traversed the annals of anime and manga for a significant portion of my life, I must say that this collaboration between Tentaka Shuzo and the Spice and Wolf franchise is nothing short of a marvelous symbiosis. The intricate dance between commerce and entertainment, reminiscent of the very plotline of the show itself, is truly captivating.

People from Japan, known for their kindness, have responded to fans’ requests and teamed up with a brewery to create a unique mead dedicated to a fox-themed goddess from the anime “Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf”. Tentaka Shuzo, a renowned Japanese sake brewery, is taking part in this collaboration to produce a special mead for promotion purposes. This beverage, named “Holo’s Apple Mead”, is crafted using apples and honey, reflecting the characters’ preferences in the show. Crunchyroll endorses Tentaka Shuzo as a prestigious brewery, highlighting their achievement of becoming the first Japanese mead brewery to win a medal at the 2019 Mazer Cup International Mead Competition, the world’s largest mead competition.

This company has collaborated with various anime characters and VTubers in the past, which makes it an excellent choice for cross-promotion. The drink “Holo’s Apple Mead” is a creation that Holo herself would devise, appealing to fans who adore this character. This beverage can be consumed chilled, hot, or straight from the bottle, with options for on the rocks, mixed with soda, or enjoyed as is. Pre-orders for the mead will commence on the company’s official store starting December 18th and will remain open until January 21st, 2025. Each 720 ml bottle costs 5,500 yen (approximately 35 USD), and shipment is scheduled to begin on January 15th.

The Role of Food (and Alcohol) in Spice and Wolf

The idea for the Spice and Wolf series is built around a trader journeying across the nation, selling various goods. Thus, partnering with a genuine Japanese brewery seems fitting. This anime follows the tale of Holo, a cunning fox deity, who accompanies a merchant named Lawrence on his travels. Although Lawrence transports more than just food items, Holo exhibits a peculiar behavior and frequently devours any edibles she encounters.

I’ve been following a captivating series that delves into various themes beyond culinary arts, such as action, romance, and everyday life. Yet, food remains a significant element in the storyline. The protagonist, Holo, is an intriguing figure once revered as a harvest deity, but later found her believers dwindling. A recurring humor in the series stems from Holo’s fondness for alcohol, which frequently sparks comedic scenarios. Besides humor, she also offers profound wisdom on topics like traveling, trading, and, most significantly, food. Apples and various aromatic spices are frequently used symbolically throughout the animated rendition of this engaging tale.

I’m absolutely thrilled about the continued journey of Spice and Wolf! Although the original anime aired between 2008 and 2009, it’s amazing to see how this captivating tale has persisted through light novels and spin-offs. One such spin-off, “Wolf and Parchment: New Theory Spice and Wolf,” focuses on Holo’s daughter, Myuri.

Collaborative limited-time release of goods between the anime “Wolf and Spice Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf” and “Tengu Sake Brewery” has been decided! Starting December 18th (Thursday) at noon, you can purchase “Horosho’s Pear Honey Sake,” a favorite of the protagonist Horo, exclusively from the official Tengu Sake Brewery online shop nationwide!
