Home Alone Director Reveals How the McCallister’s Could Afford That House (And Debunks Controversial Fan Theory)

As a film enthusiast, I have always held a special place for the magnificent abode that served as the backdrop for the heartwarming chaos of Home Alone, and more specifically, the battleground where young Kevin McCallister bravely defended his home against the bungling burglars Harry and Marv. The house, with its grandeur and hefty price tag, has always been a subject of intrigue for fans like myself, pondering over how the McCallister family could afford such a luxurious dwelling.

In movies, there are many iconic homes, but during the holidays, none is more famous than the luxurious Chicago house where Kevin McCallister and his family lived in “Home Alone”. This is the same house where Kevin defended against burglars Harry and Marv. The house is large and pricey; it was recently sold for approximately $5 million, having been purchased for $1.5 million back in 2012. Even when “Home Alone” was released in 1990, the grand house wasn’t cheap. Over the years, fans have often wondered about the McCallisters’ source of wealth to afford such a lavish residence and expensive vacations, including their trip to Paris. Now, the film’s director Chris Columbus has shared some insights, revealing that the McCallisters earned their living through hard work, although not in as dramatic a fashion as one might imagine, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As per Columbus, discussions with the screenwriter John Hughes revealed that they deliberated over the profession of the McCallister family, portrayed in the film, to explain how they could afford their lavish house – hints about this were also subtly included within the movie itself.

Previously, John and I discussed it, and we agreed on the roles we’d take on. Columbus continued by mentioning that Kate, who was quite accomplished in fashion design, excelled in her field.

In the movie, it’s hinted at that Kate is a fashion designer, as depicted by mannequins found in the basement of her house, which serve as a subtle reference to her profession. This detail is also mentioned in the novelization written by Todd Strasser, where it’s clarified that Kate is indeed a designer, while Peter, on the other hand, is only referred to as a businessman.

Regarding Peter, Columbus wasn’t entirely convinced, but he suspected it was a reference to Hughes’ actual career in advertising.

He mentioned that, given John Hughes’ background, it’s plausible he might have been employed in advertising, though he himself can’t recall his father’s occupation. This statement was made to debunk a popular fan theory that had been circulating for some time.

He clarified that it wasn’t organized crime, despite the fact that there was indeed a significant amount of organized crime prevalent in Chicago during that period.

Although Columbus’ remarks largely clarify the origin of the McCallister family’s wealth, it likely won’t prevent fans from continuing to speculate and even the film’s cast members have their own theories. For instance, Catherine O’Hara, who portrayed Kate McCallister, has suggested in the past that perhaps either Kate or Peter inherited their wealth.

In a past conversation, O’Hara expressed, “I found the house truly remarkable.” Now, let me tell you, it was undeniably beautiful, but I never pondered over their financial circumstances while filming [the movie]. Of course, they all visited Paris, didn’t they? Such speculations about the source of their wealth arise, but honestly, that wasn’t something I contemplated during our production. Perhaps they inherited it, or maybe there was some other explanation.

She even joked that maybe Peter was in charge of a cult — though she was just joking about that.

“I guess Peter had his own religion,” she said. “Church of the McCallisters.”
