It’s no wonder, given its extended run spanning more than three dozen seasons, that The Simpsons has spawned numerous memes throughout its history. Among the many adventures in Springfield, one may outshine the rest when it comes to Homer Simpson. The “Homer Hedge Meme,” depicting Homer entering and exiting a hedge to greet the Flanders family, remains popular even years after its debut. Now, two dedicated fans of The Simpsons have taken things a step further by recreating this classic scene in real life.
In October 2023, homeowners Ryan McMeans and Caitlin Swanson chose to pay tribute to The Simpsons by creating a life-sized depiction of Homer Simpsons emerging from a bush on their property. Due to passersby expressing their admiration for the Simpsons’ father figure appearing in the shrubbery, they decided to make it a permanent installation outside their house. McMeans discussed with HeraldNet how much impact the Homer sculpture has had, stating, “He serves as an entrance to a peaceful haven. We invest countless hours every week tending and enhancing our property, but everyone only seems to notice Homer.” You can view the scene in the image below.
The History of The Hedge
The iconic Homer Simpson Hedge meme debuted in “Homer Loves Flanders,” an episode from the fifth season of “The Simpsons.” This is where we see Homer forming an unlikely friendship with Ned Flanders, and later becoming fixated on the Flanders family. A memorable moment occurs when Homer pops out of their hedge, causing Ned to evade his affections. When Ned rejects him, a dejected Homer retreats back into the hedge, an incident that would become significant in “The Simpsons” for many years to come.
In a humorous twist, the popular “Hedge Meme” resurfaced in an amusing manner during the latest Halloween episode of the animated series, Treehouse of Horror XXXIII. The segment named “Simpsons World” featured numerous instances from the family’s past being reenacted to parody the HBO show Westworld. In a side-splitting scene, avid Simpsons viewers compelled Homer to reenact the hedge scene, which he eventually did, albeit reluctantly.
The Simpsons Memes Will Continue
This year saw not only the confirmation that “The Simpsons” would return for another season, but also the announcement that it will run until its forty season. Joining “The Simpsons” on Fox Animation’s roster with multiple-season renewals are “Family Guy,” “American Dad,” and “Bob’s Burgers.” In other words, Springfield’s most distinguished residents have some prestigious company.
Regarding the status of the Hedge meme in the show’s continuity, Matt Selman, the showrunner, has shed light on the series’ history and its approach to storyline events. In a recent interview, Selman explained that while they may not let established canon hinder a good story, they strive to portray characters authentically based on their established personalities. Selman added that while fans have strong opinions about the show’s events, he respects these views and doesn’t intend to contradict them if they have a preferred interpretation of what happened or didn’t happen within the series.
