The sequel to Kevin Costner’s “American Saga,” titled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” was originally scheduled for release in August 2024. However, due to poor box office performance of the first chapter of the $50 million Western, production companies Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided to delay its theatrical release. Instead, they aim to provide more opportunities for audiences to watch the initial installment of “Horizon” over the next few weeks, whether in theaters, on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) or Max streaming service.
Initially screened out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, Horizon 2 is set to make its U.S. debut during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 7. It was announced today that this delayed sequel will have its U.S. premiere. Additionally, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival will host a post-screening question and answer session with Kevin Costner, who wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the second installment of the four-part Western saga.
2:00 PM will see a free preview of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” at the Arlington Theatre, followed by the premiere of “Horizon 2” at 6:00 PM. Later in the day, Kevin Costner will take part in another Q&A after a showing of the documentary “Beyond the Horizon,” which is about the making of the series, within the SBIFF Film Center at 8:20 PM on February 13th.
The release date for the second installment of “Horizon” has not been disclosed yet. Initially, both chapters were planned to be released only a few weeks apart – Chapter 1 on June 28 and Chapter 2 on August 16. However, due to the poor box office performance of Chapter 1 during its opening weekend, which grossed $11 million and ranked third in domestic box office behind “Inside Out 2” and “A Quiet Place: Day One”, the release dates were rescheduled. The digital version of Horizon: Chapter 1 became available on Premium VOD on July 16 and managed to earn $38 million during its six-week run in theaters.
As a discerning film enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the intriguing series “Horizon.” Initially, it garnered attention on Max before making its way to the vast screens of Netflix. There, it swiftly ascended to the second spot on their Top 10 list, a remarkable feat accomplished just weeks after its premiere in December.
As a movie enthusiast, I couldn’t be more thrilled by the response and anticipation from viewers towards our film “Horizon,” and the eagerness for the narrative to progress in “Horizon 2.” It’s heartening to see that Kevin crafted this movie for those who cherish cinema and desired an adventure. The support we’ve received from fellow cinephiles, along with theater owners, as they embark on this cinematic journey, simply strengthens our conviction in the power of storytelling and our work. We’re grateful to everyone who’s joined us on this ride so far, and we eagerly look forward to broadening that window as it will undoubtedly heighten the experience of witnessing “Horizon 2.”
In this first chapter of Kevin Costner’s sprawling western tale, titled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” you can find Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jamie Campbell Bower, Will Patton, and the director himself, starring together. This three-hour long episode takes us through the lives of various groups, including families, acquaintances, and adversaries, as it unfolds during the American Civil War. Currently, you can watch this epic on both Max and Netflix streaming platforms.
