Despite initial hopes, the Western film series starring Kevin Costner has been finding it tough to gain momentum after the somewhat lukewarm response to Chapter 1 last summer. Recent updates from one of the stars of Chapter 1 indicate that production on Chapter 2 may still be stuck in the same spot as before.
In an interview, actress Isabelle Fuhrman (who plays Diamond Kittredge in Horizon) provided vague updates about Chapter 2’s release, admitting that she’s just as clueless as fans are regarding the sequel or where the story goes next. Despite this uncertainty, Fuhrman hinted that Kevin Costner may be working on the film and expressed her hope for its release. “I really wish I knew,” she said, “but unfortunately, I’m in the same boat as you. I truly hope we get to see the second one. Honestly, I have no idea what Kevin’s planning, but he’s probably cooking something up. Yes, I’m a big fan of the second film; it delves deeper into the women of that era and their experiences, offering more insight than the first installment, which serves as a setup for this world.”
As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on the release of “Chapter 2,” which was initially showcased last August and had its domestic premiere in February this year. New Line Cinema and Costner’s Territory Pictures have chosen to delay the second installment, providing fans like me with a chance to revisit “Chapter 1.” Despite my anticipation, neither Kevin Costner nor any other member of the “Horizon” team has given us a clue about when exactly we can expect to see “Chapter 2.”
The production of Horizon, which began in 1988 when Costner first commissioned it, took several twists and turns before finally getting off the ground in 2022. Initial attempts to sell it to Disney in 2003 were unsuccessful. Originally planned as a modest production, Horizon eventually transformed into a four-part film with Costner shouldering most of the $50 million budget for the first installment. Featuring Costner as Hayes Ellison alongside Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi, and Jena Malone, Chapter 1 struggled to recoup its $50 million investment and received mixed critical responses, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes score of 51%.
The lackluster impact of Chapter 1 was further exacerbated by the postponement of Chapter 2’s release date, as well as financial troubles. However, despite these seemingly consecutive setbacks, there remains a belief that critics have undervalued the project and that it holds long-term potential.
The Future of Horizon Is Unclear
Costner’s film “Horizon” has been finding comfort and charting success on streaming platforms following its disappointing theatrical performance. This is due to the belief that it strikes a chord with movie enthusiasts emotionally, offering something unique within the Western genre – such as giving more prominent roles to female characters.
Chapter 1 is available to stream via Netflix.
