In an effort to broaden the user base of PlayStation Network among PC gamers, Sony is now mandating the use of a PSN account for the complete edition of “Horizon Forbidden West” on PC. Consequently, this decision has led to the game being inaccessible for players from various countries.
The countries listed are those where Sony’s PlayStation Network service has not been introduced yet, mirroring the regions in which Sony’s Helldivers 2 doesn’t provide access due to its PSN account requirement, a move that stirred up debate when it was implemented. This list can be found on SteamDB.
It’s worth mentioning that the Complete Edition of Horizon Forbidden West doesn’t include a multiplayer feature, and requiring a PlayStation Network (PSN) account seems unusual. Interestingly, it appears Sony could be considering regional locking through a required PSN account for God of War Ragnarök as well, based on recent updates.
In May 2024, the game “Helldivers 2” was removed from over 170 different countries. This action was taken by Sony because they wanted to ensure that PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts were required for this multiplayer title. However, PSN is not available in these specific countries, which led to the removal. Prior to this region-blocking, there was significant criticism when it was announced that a PSN account would be necessary for the game, by both Arrowhead Games and Sony.
Contrary to expectations, Helldivers 2 has indeed experienced success, with sales surpassing 12 million units by last May. Post-launch, it’s been consistently updated to rectify problems and rebalance equipment, plus new content such as pilotable mech suits have been introduced.
