Update on January 22nd, 2025 at 3:15am: It appears that NCSOFT’s previously unconfirmed Horizon MMO might not be cancelled.
In the email posted on Ruliweb, journalist Seo Jeong-geun clarified to a reader that the terminated Project H discussed in his piece has no connection whatsoever to “Horizon”.
Here’s where things start getting a bit puzzling. Resumes from NCSOFT mention a game titled Project Skyline, which sports the same typography as the Horizon logo. Interestingly enough, this project was earlier known as Project H.
It seems that the terminated Project H is not equivalent to Project Skyline, implying that the speculated Horizon MMO might possibly still be in development.
Indeed, it’s undeniable that NCSOFT is encountering tough times, which might have led them to reassess their focus or reprioritize certain aspects of their operations.
We’re planning to reach out to both Sony and NCSOFT to seek information about their earlier announced partnership. We’ll share the updates as soon as we receive more details.
About a year past, I got super excited when Sony shared the news of their strategic alliance with the South Korean publishing giant, NCSOFT. The buzz was that they were planning to develop a multi-platform MMO, inspired by the Horizon series!
In that moment, CEO Jim Ryan expressed: “Collaborating with NCSOFT aligns with our plan to extend beyond consoles and enlarge PlayStation’s influence to a more extensive player base. Similar to SIE, NCSOFT has a vision for crafting exceptional, impactful entertainment experiences for players worldwide, and we are thrilled about joining forces to explore the frontiers of gaming even further.
It seems the game, referred to as both Project H and Project Skyline within the company, was aiming for release on PS5, PC, and mobile platforms. This move aligns with Sony’s strategy to broaden its player base.
But that game appears to have been cancelled, as NCSOFT falls upon hard times.
In their New Year message this month, co-CEOs Kim Taek-jin and Park Byung-moo urged employees to make 2025 a year of tremendous effort, emphasizing that if NCSOFT doesn’t start turning things around by 2025, the company may never have a future. Quite a challenge!
After a series of job cuts in October the previous year, a recent report from Korean publication MTN indicates that the previously mentioned Project H has been terminated during a feasibility evaluation. It appears that staff members are set to be reassigned to another project instead.
It’s worth mentioning that the game here isn’t similar or connected to an independent online multiplayer edition of Horizon, which is being developed by the creators of the series. As of now, it appears that this particular game is still under development.
But Sony’s been having a particularly tough time expanding its business recently.
Recently, a live-action God of War game, developed by Bluepoint, along with another title from Bend Studio, were both scrapped. Unfortunately, Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to successfully adapt their franchises for mobile gaming. Last year, the mobile studio Neon Koi closed down after being acquired in 2022.
Due to increasing expenses and a slow-moving console market, PlayStation is looking for alternative methods to expand its brands and boost earnings. However, aside from the significant achievement of Helldivers 2, it seems the company is finding it difficult to create anything that gains traction in the market.
