As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the imminent release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered has stirred a mix of anticipation and skepticism within me. Having played the original on PlayStation 4 back in 2017 and recently diving into its sequel, Forbidden West, I can attest to the game’s captivating narrative and immersive world.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is scheduled to launch on both PC and PS5 in just three days, on October 31st. This release aims to elevate the graphics and performance of Horizon Zero Dawn to match those of its upcoming sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, on PS5. To achieve this goal, significant upgrades are required throughout the game. Whether these improvements will indeed validate the remaster’s existence or even fuel demand for it is yet to be determined. However, one thing is certain: this isn’t a simple remaster, as some have pointed out.

Unexpectedly, PlayStation enthusiasts will find an extra bonus: the game includes ten hours of additional motion-capture data for its characters. As confirmed by the developers of the remaster, Nixxes Software, this is indeed the case. This extra data, they say, makes the characters’ dialogues “more lively” and more similar to the interactions seen in Horizon Forbidden West.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, there are approximately 300 conversations and more than 3100 dialogue options. To seamlessly incorporate this vast amount of updated animations into these interactions, Mark Bazelmans, Senior Technical Artist, shares that they developed a tool using Python to manage around 2500 motion capture (mocap) files given by Guerrilla. This tool replaced the original animations in conversations with the new mocap, erased outdated events, and swapped them with the freshly processed mocap and setup.

Baselmans explained further, “We shifted our attention towards establishing a Maya pipeline for our animation team to effortlessly import, modify, and re-export individual motion capture files. This was crucial for any additional adjustments like finger movement, art direction feedback, and corrections. The animators could pick the dialogue choice from a list, which would either build a new scene or open an existing one. Our tool linked character models and imported dialogue audio, enabling better synchronization of movements with the dialogues. Later on, we expanded this pipeline to accommodate existing animations for both conversations and cinematics, as they too needed editing.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is scheduled to launch globally on Halloween, October 31, available for both PS5 and PC platforms. Upon its release, players can expect a price tag of $49.99 for newcomers on PlayStation and PC gaming systems. If you already own the game on PS4, you’ll be able to upgrade to the PS5 version at an affordable $9.99 cost.
