What you need to know

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is coming to Windows PC and PlayStation 5.
  • The game is set to launch at $50, with a $10 upgrade option for anyone that already owns the original game on PC or PlayStation 4.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered requires a PlayStation Network (PSN) account on PC.
  • PlayStation Studios games have started requiring a PlayStation Network account in order to play, including entirely single-player games.

As a long-time gamer and researcher of gaming trends, I find myself increasingly baffled by Sony’s insistence on requiring PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts for their PC games. It’s like they’re trying to turn my PC into a PlayStation in disguise!

Sony’s trend of requiring PlayStation Network accounts for PC games isn’t slowing down.

To play Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on your PC, you’ll need to have an active PlayStation Network (PSN) account. This detail was shared on the PlayStation Blog as part of the game’s announcement. The remastered version can be purchased for $50 on both PlayStation 5 and PC, but if you already own the original game, there’s a $10 upgrade path available.

In the year 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn debuted on personal computers, marking the beginning of Sony’s expanding mission to port PlayStation Studios games onto PC platforms. Unlike its console counterpart, this edition doesn’t necessitate a PlayStation Network account to play.

The remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn is planned for release on October 31, 2024. Pre-orders can be made starting October 3, 2024, through PlayStation, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.

PlayStation Studios games require an account moving forward

Initially, when PlayStation started releasing games for PC consistently, it wasn’t necessary to have a PSN account.

The introduction of Helldivers 2 this year sparked quite a commotion when it was initially intended to necessitate a PlayStation account at its release. However, the developers found themselves dealing with network issues and temporarily disabled that requirement. Later on, PlayStation attempted to enforce the feature post-launch, but eventually backed down due to strong public criticism.

From that point forward, any PlayStation Studios titles appearing on PC necessitate a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. This rule applies to the recently-released PC version of God of War Ragnarök as well. For a short while, a mod enabled players to bypass this requirement, but unexpectedly, this mod was taken down without providing an explanation.

In the upcoming weeks, more games from PlayStation Studios will be available on personal computers as well, among them being the remake of the chilling narrative game Until Dawn, scheduled for release on October 4, 2024.
