In the upcoming series “Star City”, which is a spin-off of “For All Mankind”, Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has been cast in a yet undisclosed role. Known for his roles as Otto Hightower in “House of the Dragon” and the Lizard in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Ifans will be part of this enigmatic new series set in an alternate history timeline where the Soviet space program competes with the American one. Apple TV+ announced the spin-off of “For All Mankind” back in April 2024, with plans to focus on the Soviet space program’s Chief Designer who propels the Soviet Space program forward. As reported by Variety, Ifans will bring this character to life.
In “For All Mankind,” we delve into a fictional universe where the space race of the 1960s persisted instead of concluding. The Soviet Union managed to land on the moon before the U.S., but this setback instead fueled American determination, driving them to push boundaries in rocketry and space travel even further. Over four seasons, the story unfolds, jumping a decade with each season as it paints a picture of this alternate timeline’s evolution.
As Apple indicates, Star City will trace its origins once more, possibly delving even deeper into this alternate narrative. The official synopsis portrays it as a gripping, suspenseful tale that rewinds us to the pivotal point in the alternative telling of the space race – when the Soviet Union was first to land a man on the moon. Unlike before, we’ll delve into the lives of cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence agents within the Soviet space program, offering insights into the dangers they faced as they worked together to advance humanity.
It’s clear that Ifans boasts an impressive resume, making him a natural fit for this part. Fans of genre films will likely recognize him most from his roles as Xenophilius Lovegood in the Harry Potter series, Dr. Curt Connors in The Amazing Spider-Man, and now as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, in House of the Dragon. In this show, he takes on a crucial role as an advisor to various Targaryen kings, navigating the tensions between his family’s aspirations and the looming danger of dragon flames.
Instead of that, a brief space walk would be child’s play for Ifans, given his training. As for Star City, it’s under construction but a launch date has yet to be set. Similarly, Season 5 of For All Mankind is in production, but no release date has been disclosed as of now. You can stream the first four seasons on Apple TV+ at present.
