House of the Dead: Scariest Sequel Since Event Horizon!

The well-known House of the Dead video game series by Sega is set to receive a new movie, and it’s being developed under the direction of Paul W.S. Anderson. Known for his previous works adapting video games like Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter onto the big screen, this director has hinted that this upcoming project will be distinct from his past work. In a conversation with Variety, Anderson stated that he plans to take things a step further with this new film. When asked if House of the Dead would lean more towards horror like his work on Event Horizon, Anderson suggested that it might indeed push the boundaries in that direction.

Absolutely correct! It will indeed be an immersive and extremely frightening experience. Just like a video game, everything happens in real-time, meaning it mirrors the gaming experience. The action continues until you complete the game or meet your end. That’s basically how it works.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve always appreciated the campy vibe that The House of the Dead games have offered, with some instances even intentionally leaning into it. But in House of the Dead: Overkill, they really embraced grindhouse horror clichés, and it was memorable! It looks like this time around, Anderson is opting for a more serious approach, which I’m excited to see unfold. If the upcoming House of the Dead adaptation manages to amplify the horror elements akin to Event Horizon, I can’t help but envision this movie surpassing where previous attempts faltered. Unfortunately, Uwe Boll’s 2003 House of the Dead movie and its sequel didn’t fare well critically or commercially.

Given its past setbacks, it’s not surprising that The House of the Dead is getting another opportunity. The resurgence of video game adaptations over the recent years has been significant, fueled primarily by the success of Sega and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. With studios scrambling to secure any video game property for adaptation, Sega has seen a boom; alongside the Sonic and House of the Dead films, a Golden Axe animated series is in development at Comedy Central, and Last Year saw the premiere of Yakuza: Like a Dragon on Prime Video.

As I eagerly shared with you earlier about my chat with Variety, Anderson revealed that the script for “House of the Dead” is practically finished, and the plan is to start filming by the end of this year’s fourth quarter. Sadly, this implies that we might need to wait a couple more years before it graces our movie screens. This news may not be what fans were hoping for, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that the director manages to create a film worthy of the exceptional games in the series. From Anderson’s interview, it seems his adaptation of House of the Dead could resonate with both ardent gamers and casual viewers alike.
