As a devoted fan of “House of the Dragon,” I’ve been captivated by Daemon Targaryen’s (Matt Smith) evolution throughout Season 2. His intentions have always seemed multifaceted, but in Sunday’s episode, he brought his true colors to light.
In the recent episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Daemon Targaryen has made his hidden intentions more overt. It’s been apparent since he arrived at Harrenhal that winning the war for Rhaenyra wasn’t his sole focus. Instead, there have been ominous undertones suggesting a darker agenda. In this latest installment, Daemon revealed his true goals and showed just how far he’s willing to go in order to secure victory for himself. (Beware: This discussion includes significant spoilers from “House of the Dragon” Season 2! Proceed with caution.)
After arriving at Harrenhal, Daemon has been haunted by disturbing images of the individuals he’s harmed in his power-seeking endeavors and those who contributed to his present situation. It’s common knowledge that Daemon harbored a strong desire for rulership and believed he was entitled to be king instead of Viserys. Undoubtedly, one motivation driving him towards Rhaenyra was the prospect of securing a position near the Iron Throne upon Viserys’ demise.
As a gamer, I’ve been playing my character with a noble backstory, striving for power in the name of my queen. However, during my latest conversation with Simon Storm, I let slip my true intentions. I boldly asked him to address me as “King,” although he corrected me, referring to me as the King Consort instead. Yet, I simply dismissed the correction and emphasized the significance of being referred to as a king.
Daemon plans to station an army at Harrenhal and seize control of the Riverlands to support Rhaenyra in the war. He hopes to maintain authority over this force long after the conflict. His rule will be strict and unyielding. When the Brackens refused allegiance, Daemon dispatched the Blackwoods with a mandate to sway them by any violent means. This involved plundering their settlements and taking innocent lives.
The Riverlands lords have turned against him, and just as the episode was wrapping up, they arrived at Harrenhal to withdraw their allegiance. They refused to continue fighting for what they considered a tyrant. Now, Daemon finds himself in a race against time to secure even one of the victories he had initially sought when he first set off for Harrenhal.
According to George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” book, the events in “House of the Dragon” occur 200 years prior to those in “Game of Thrones.” In the second season of “House of the Dragon,” Westeros is teetering on the edge of a devastating civil war. The Green Council and the Black Council are at odds, each advocating for different rulers: King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively. Tune in to HBO every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET for new episodes of “House of the Dragon.”
