As a long-time fan of Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon, I was both thrilled and disturbed by the shocking return of Paddy Considine as King Viserys in episode 6 of season 2. Having seen his character meet his tragic end in the first season, I wasn’t expecting to see him again, especially since Milly Alcock’s return as young Rhaenyra was already a pleasant surprise.
Warning: Major spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 6.
In the second season of House of the Dragon, Milly Alcock reappeared as the younger version of Rhaenyra. Another well-known figure has unexpectedly come back to the show, brought about by Daemon’s (played by Matt Smith) unsettling dreams.
In the sixth episode of Daemon’s side mission at Harrenhal, he encountered a vision of his older brother, the deceased King Viserys, portrayed by Paddy Considine once more.
After Viserys’s death in the first season, which initiated the chaotic “Dance of Dragons,” it was unlikely that Condeine would reappear this season. However, as Daemon becomes increasingly distraught and determined to seize the throne, his visions grow more disturbing. In these visions, he encounters his deceased brother Viserys, who sits confidently on the Iron Throne.
The following events bear strong similarities to a past conversation between Viserys and Daemon from season 1. This encounter ensued when Daemon insensitively remarked about Viserys’s late son Baelon, referring to him as “the brief heir.”
In simpler terms, during their conversation, Viserys expresses regret that Daemon wasn’t by his side after the deaths of his wife and son. He then announces that he intends to name Rhaenyra as his successor instead of Daemon. As a result, Viserys exiles Daemon to Runestone.
When the vision fades away, Daemon mistakenly confronts Ser Simon Strong (portrayed by Simon Russell Beale), assuming he’s responsible for the visions in some way.
Later on, Daemon appears to Viserys in a vision while he’s deeply mourning the loss of his wife Aemma. Daemon reassures him, “I’ve arrived now.” As Viserys breaks down and clings to him, he apologizes, “I’m sorry for not being there before. I’m here for you now.”
In the course of the storyline, Daemon’s prophetic visions have grown more unsettling as he devises schemes to seize the crown, including images of beheading a younger form of his wife Rhaenyra and an inappropriate scene involving sexual intimacy with his late mother Alyssa.
In episode 6, Daemon forms an alliance with Alys Rivers, played by Gayle Rankin. This new partnership could prove to be quite formidable.
