House of the Dragon Season 2 Finale Fully Establishes the Targaryens’ Secret Superpower

House of the Dragon Season 2 Finale Fully Establishes the Targaryens' Secret Superpower

As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s intricate world-building, I must say that the latest season of House of the Dragon has truly outdone itself. The way they’ve been unfolding the Targaryen lineage and their unique ‘gift’ of prophetic dreams is nothing short of mesmerizing.

In simpler terms, House of the Dragon‘s Season 2 finale set its main characters in vulnerable positions as the Targaryen Civil Wars intensified. For instance, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) chose to withdraw from the conflict before it became too costly; on the other hand, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) was compelled to leave his passive stance and make a choice about backing Queen Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) rule.

Daemon’s storyline was one of the most divisive elements of House of the Dragon Season 2, as the charismatic rascal was sidelined (literally and figuratively) at Harrenhal, trying to usurp the throne for himself. However, in HotD Season 2 Episode 8 “The Queen Who Ever Was” Daemon was finally moved by something greater than himself when he touched a Weirwood tree in Harrenhal’s courtyard and saw a far-spanning vision of the future, and how the Targaryen bloodline (through Daenerys Targaryen) would stand against the darkness of the White Walkers. The vision has a profound effect on Daemon, instilling him with a sense of higher purpose. The vision is also the clearest depiction of “Greensight” or dream visions – the “superpower” that runs through the Targaryen line and first helped change the family’s fate.

The Legend of Daeney the Dreamer

As a fervent admirer, allow me to recount the extraordinary tale of Daenerys Targaryen, who was the daughter of Aenar Targaryen, famously known as “Aenar the Exile.” We hailed from Old Valyria, and 12 years prior to the cataclysmic event known as the Doom of Valyria, my ancestor Daenerys had a chilling prophetic vision. Moved by this ominous foreboding, Aenar divested his holdings in Valyria and led our family, enslaved people, riches, and dragons to Dragonstone in Westeros. The Doom of Valyria unfolded as predicted, eradicating all the families of Valyrian Dragonlords – except for the Targaryens. The subsequent era, known as the “Century of Blood,” was marked by chaos. However, amidst this turmoil, Aegon Targaryen, my ancestor, expanded our family’s empire from Dragonstone, conquering much of Westeros (with Dorne remaining unclaimed). Thus, the Targaryen Dynasty was established and ruled for generations to come.

In the series ‘House of the Dragon’, we see a more intricate exploration of the Targaryens, their prophetic dreams being traced as a hereditary trait within the family. In the first season, King Viserys I (played by Paddy Considine) shares with Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) that Aegon the Conqueror experienced similar prophetic dreams of The Long Night, much like Daeney the Dreamer’s visions of The Doom. These prophetic dreams evolved into what is now known as “The Song of Ice and Fire” prophecy, which foretold the arrival of two significant figures: Aegon Targaryen/Jon Snow (represented by ‘Ice’) and Daenerys Targaryen (symbolized by ‘Fire’).

In an earlier interview, Condal shared that George R.R. Martin hinted to them early on about Aegon the Conqueror having dreamt of the White Walkers approaching the wall and casting a chill over the land with their darkness. However, this vision didn’t make it into historical records because either Aegon never shared it or the people he told failed to pass this information on to the history writers, leaving it only in Martin’s imagination.

Daemon and Queen Helaena Targaryen.

Viserys and Rhaenyra learn about Aegon’s visions indirectly through the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy that Aegon shared with his offspring as a solemn duty. On the other hand, Daemon and Helaena get to experience these visions directly when Daemon interacts with the Weirwood tree – it’s worth noting that Helaena has hinted at possessing future-seeing abilities since her arrival in the story. The vision that Daemon witnesses contains a sneaky appearance by Brynen Rivers, a bastard son of a future Targaryen ruler who eventually became both the first Three-Eyed Raven and the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.

As a historian who has spent my career studying the history of Westeros, I cannot help but marvel at the extraordinary role that the Targaryen bloodline played in shaping the fate of the realm over generations. Their secret ability to communicate with dragons, passed down through their lineage like a sacred flame, guided them in making moves that ultimately saved Westeros from the impending doom brought by the Night King and his White Walkers.

House of the Dragon is streaming on HBO and Max.
