As a dedicated fan who’s been following the Game of Thrones universe since its inception, I must admit that my expectations for House of the Dragon were sky-high. The first season was a breathtaking journey, and I eagerly anticipated the continuation. However, the second season finale left me with a sense of anticlimax, somewhat reminiscent of a dragon’s roar that fizzled out too soon.
The second season of House of the Dragon concluded this past week, however, the finale failed to reach the peak achieved by the initial episode.
In a timeframe nearly two centuries prior to the initial show, the Game of Thrones prequel unfolds, focusing on the infamous “Dance of the Dragons” – a devastating internal conflict within House Targaryen, revolving around who should rightfully claim the Iron Throne.
In this latest episode, named “The Queen Who Ever Was,” it attracted a record 8.9 million viewers simultaneously watching on both HBO and Max within the U.S., though it didn’t quite match the peak viewership of season 1 (10.2 million) or the previous season finale (9.3 million).
Contrarily, some viewers consider the final episode of season 2 as underwhelming, sparking discussions on social platforms about whether it could’ve been more impactful by including The Battle of the Gullet (rumored to be featured in season 3 instead).
As a devotee, I can’t help but feel the weight of responsibility on Ryan Condal’s shoulders as he strives diligently to restore the once-revered Game of Thrones franchise, which took a significant hit to its reputation following the critically panned final season of the original series.
If the less-than-stellar opinions continue, the third season could face difficulties in its launch.)
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Condal explained, “As a showrunner, it’s my job to find the right balance between telling an engaging story and making the most of the resources at hand.”
“To deliver The Gullet, one of the highly-anticipated action sequences from Fire & Blood, justice, we need an abundance of resources such as construction, props like armor and costumes, visual effects, and more. We’re working hard to ensure it gets the attention and space it deserves.”
Indeed, it’s essential to acknowledge that traditional overnight ratings no longer encompass the entire viewing picture nowadays, as an increasing number of viewers opt to watch their preferred programs at their convenience through streaming services.
Given that the finale of House of the Dragon season 2 reportedly resulted in the biggest streaming day ever on Max in the U.S., it’s reasonable to infer that the overall viewership is probably significantly greater than the numbers mentioned earlier.
Fear not, fans! The third season of House of the Dragon has already been confirmed, even before the second season’s debut. However, as series creator Ryan Condal mentioned after the finale, the show is planned to conclude with its fourth season.
House of the Dragon is available to stream on Sky and NOW.
