As a devoted fan who has lived through the turbulent times of the Seven Kingdoms twice over, I can confidently say that Season 2 of House of the Dragon has truly outdone itself. The dragons have taken center stage, making this tale of fire and blood even more captivating than before!
Caution: This article reveals significant spoilers for the House of the Dragon Season 2 ending… House of the Dragon lived up to its title in Season 2, as dragons controlled by the Targaryens played a pivotal role in the series’ narrative. The Dance of Dragons has indeed unfolded, with an increasing number of dragons entering the fray as the season progressed. In the climactic moments of Sunday night’s Season 2 finale, two more dragons made their long-awaited appearances.
During the final episodes leading to Season 2, the series House of the Dragon hinted at two new dragons that had never appeared on the show before. One is the untamed dragon known as Sheepstealer, wandering the Vale of Arryn. The other is Tessarion, who has been reared in Oldtown alongside Alicent’s youngest son, Daeron Targaryen.
In the final moments of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, two dragons made their entrance. Interestingly, Tessarion, a new character, was hinted at earlier in the season finale preview. As the armies of Oldtown prepared for battle, she could be spotted soaring above them on her dragon.
For several weeks, Rhaena Targaryen in the Vale has been the subject of jest due to her fascination with a wild dragon. Throughout the final episode, she is seen wandering through the hills in search of this elusive beast. The episode concludes with her encountering the dragon, hinting strongly that Rhaena will become a dragonrider and continue the storyline of Nettles from Fire & Blood, bonding with the wild dragon instead of Sheepstealer.
The Death of a Dragon
Apart from introducing a few fresh dragons, the final episode of Season 2 also disclosed the sad news that one dragon from the series had passed away. This might not be unexpected for many viewers.
At the start of the episode, King Aegon II informed Larys that their shared dragon, Sunfyre, had perished following the Battle of Rook’s Rest, where it sustained severe wounds. Previously, we were under the impression that Sunfyre was still at Rook’s Rest, possibly recovering. As per Aegon, the dragon’s condition was worse than his own, which speaks volumes about its state.
According to George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood”, the series titled “House of the Dragon” is set 200 years prior to the events depicted in “Game of Thrones“. In the second season of “House of the Dragon“, Westeros finds itself on the verge of a brutal civil war, as the Green and Black Councils clash over their support for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra. Fresh episodes of “House of the Dragon” can be seen every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
The principal cast of House of the Dragon features Matt Smith portraying Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke playing Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy in the role of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II Targaryen, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower.
