Fans of “Game of Thrones” can anticipate a series of significant events in Westeros, as suggested by HBO executive Francesca Orsi. In an interview with Deadline on Wednesday, she discussed the various projects in progress, including Season 3 of “House of the Dragon“. She confirmed that filming for “House of the Dragon” is about to commence and hinted that the eagerly awaited “Battle of the Gullet”, which was initially cut from the end of Season 2, will kick off this new season with a powerful start. She also shared details on the current progress of set design and pre-production, as well as some of the remarkable talents involved in this naval battle scene.
As a devoted fan of “House of the Dragon,” I was eagerly anticipating the grandeur of Season 2 with its initial planned 10 episodes. However, unexpected changes occurred deep into the production phase, reducing it to eight episodes instead. This sudden reduction left the creative minds scrambling for resources and time to rework the narrative. Regrettably, a major battle intended for the climax had to be omitted. Yet, Orsi, in her recent statement, assured us that this sacrifice will undoubtedly yield significant rewards in Season 3. Furthermore, she subtly hinted at the current stage of production, keeping our curiosity piqued.
She expressed her enthusiasm, stating, ‘I’m thrilled! I believe you’re in for a wonderful shock when we kick off the [season] with an exhilarating confrontation.’ After waiting, it was truly worth it. I recently visited the set and witnessed everything that was being prepared. I’m so grateful we waited because this season is going to surpass all expectations, and I don’t think we could have accomplished what we have now at that earlier stage.
House of the Dragon, the television series, is derived from George R.R. Martin’s fictional history book Fire & Blood. This implies that while readers may have a sense of what will unfold in the show, it comes secondhand, not as a direct narrative like the one presented on screen. So, for instance, viewers might be eagerly awaiting the “Battle of the Gullet,” but according to showrunner Ryan Condal, it would be more satisfying to watch it in Season 3 instead of rushing it in Season 2. This seems to align with Orsi’s perspective as well.
Orsi continued, “Given its immense size, we needed time for construction.” He added that one of the lead producers, Kevin de la Noy, had previously worked on the movie Titanic. As a result, he has a deep understanding of the events surrounding the Titanic and how it was produced, which he applies to this project.
You don’t have to have read “Fire & Blood” to envision how incredible this will be for the series. In the final episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Tyland Lannister, Aegon II’s Master of Ships, sailed back from Essos with a flotilla from the Triarchy, directly challenging the blockade established by Rhaenyra’s allies, House Velaryon.
The series “House of the Dragon” is anticipated to run for four seasons, but HBO hasn’t confirmed its renewal as of now. However, there’s a hint of another spinoff in the works, with Orsi suggesting it could be quite promising. The network has been contemplating various potential spinoffs within the realm of Westeros, but when Orsi spoke about another one, she was referring to one specifically focused on “the Targaryen line.” This leads us to believe that the new series might revolve around “Aegon’s Conquest,” a war in which House Targaryen initially seized control and united the Seven Kingdoms into a single realm.
In 2026, you can anticipate the start of Season 3 for the series “House of the Dragon” on both HBO and Max. At present, Seasons 1 and 2 are accessible for streaming on Max. George R.R. Martin’s books, such as “Fire & Blood“, are currently obtainable in print, digital, and audiobook formats.
