House of the Dragon Showrunner Addresses Otto Hightower’s Season 2 Finale Twist

As a devoted fan of the enchanting saga that is “House of the Dragon,” I find myself enthralled by the tantalizing mystery that has unfolded in the season finale, particularly regarding the intriguing character of Otto Hightower. The Welshman in me, having spent countless hours poring over the annals of Welsh history and its penchant for political intrigue, can’t help but be captivated by this enigma.

CAUTION: This post reveals key plot points from the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon! Proceed with caution if you don’t wish to be spoiled… Last Sunday’s Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon left viewers with a lot of unanswered questions, as we anticipate what will happen in Season 3. One particularly intriguing mystery that remains is the whereabouts of Otto Hightower, who has been largely absent for much of the season.

In the early stages of the second season, Rhys Ifans’ character Otto, who served as the Hand of the King, was let go from his position and hinted at returning to Oldtown. Since then, viewers haven’t had any contact with Otto. However, in a rather enigmatic scene during the final moments of the Season 2 finale, Otto was seen captive in a cell-like structure, looking up as a light drew near. The details regarding how he ended up there, how long he has been imprisoned, and who is keeping him are still unclear. Regrettably, it seems we’ll have to wait for the show’s return before learning more about Otto’s situation.

During a press gathering on Monday (as reported by Variety), co-creator and series manager Ryan Condal was queried regarding Hightower’s potential reappearance, and he maintained an air of mystery, keeping his responses as enigmatic as feasible.

Condal shared that it was wonderful to see Rhys return to the narrative, and he added that the saga of Otto Hightower is still unfolding.

Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed the final episode of House of the Dragon’s second season, was likewise questioned about the significant revelation concerning Otto in an interview with Variety, much like Condal. However, similar to Condal, she chose not to disclose any substantial details.

“The director instructed me to film that specific scene,” he expressed. “I’m curious about his location as well. But here’s the thing, I’m not aware! It seems like there are numerous discussions happening in the writers’ room, and then we, the actors, are left out of the loop. Not a single one of us knows! They don’t inform us, nor do they tell the actors. I believe it’s unfair.”

According to George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” novel, the series “House of the Dragon” takes place 200 years before the happenings in “Game of Thrones.” In its second season, Westeros is on the verge of a brutal civil war as the Green and Black Councils are at odds, each supporting either King Aegon or Queen Rhaenyra. Catch new episodes of “House of the Dragon” every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

The lineup for the show “House of the Dragon” features Matt Smith portraying Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke taking on the role of Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy playing Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Steve Toussaint in the part of Lord Corlys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II Targaryen, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Rhys Ifans in the role of Ser Otto Hightower.
