As a die-hard fan of House of the Dragon, I have to say that the season 2 finale was nothing short of exhilarating! The unexpected turn of events behind the scenes only added to the excitement.
As a dedicated fan who has read George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” and watched every episode of “House of the Dragon,” I feel compelled to warn my fellow enthusiasts about potential spoilers for Season 2, Episode 8. Having invested countless hours into immersing myself in this captivating world, I wouldn’t want anyone to accidentally stumble upon plot twists before experiencing them firsthand. So, heed my advice: exercise caution when perusing articles or discussions about the latest episode, and prepare for a thrilling continuation of the Targaryen saga!
In the last episode of House of the Dragon’s second season, we encountered numerous unexpected twists, and it seems that off-screen, there were just as many unexpected developments too.
Additionally, the episode showcased a significant turn of events reminiscent of Game of Thrones, while the Greens and the Blacks finally took decisive steps towards launching an all-out conflict.
Many readers of George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood” novel were anxiously anticipating if the final episode would align with the book’s storyline.
In the book, young Prince Jace Velaryon (played by Harry Collett) takes command of the dragonseed team, known as Team Black, during a significant battle, referred to as the Battle of the Gullet, against their opponents, the Greens.
Regrettably, Jace perishes in the storyline, implying that if this were to occur in the series, it would once again end with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) mourning the loss of her son at the close of a season.
In the final episode of House of the Dragon’s second season, there was no depiction of the battle or Jace’s demise, a decision that left the actor themselves taken aback.
Pondering the near-death experience of his character, Collett shared with Variety: “I genuinely believed that this would mark the end for me and Jace.”
…finds oneself often facing an uncomfortable situation when attending a script reading, thinking, “Is it appropriate now? And will I have to perform before an audience?”
However, as we reached the final episode’s reading from the script, it turned out to be quite unexpected. I approached Ryan [Condal] and exclaimed, “Man, I thought that was it! I thought I was going to meet my end!”
He went on explaining, “I told Ryan, ‘I believed this was my moment.’ To which he replied, ‘Dude, I would’ve reached out to you!’ It’s a tradition known as ‘the last call’, so you don’t have to make the announcement during the script reading in front of everyone, which I think is quite considerate.”
“Collett commented, ‘It turns out my worry was unwarranted, but I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue another season. Regardless of what happens, I’m just grateful to be a part of it all.'”
However, Collett has chosen not to reveal if he’s received the dreaded ‘termination notice’ for season 3. When asked about it by Variety, he responded cryptically: “We’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we? The decision remains confidential between me and myself – if and when it happens.”
Instead, the climax had Jace, his mother, and Bethany Antonia Targaryen (Baela) readying the novice dragonriders for combat against the Greens. As they were readying for battle, it’s clear that there are exciting prospects awaiting us in season 3.
As for whether or not that also involves Jace’s death, we’ll simply have to wait and see.
In the United Kingdom, you can watch House of the Dragon’s second season on Sky Atlantic and NOW. If you’re interested in learning how to subscribe to Sky TV, here are some steps to guide you.
