2025’s highly-anticipated game, “DOOM: The Dark Ages“, is shaping up to be a home run with the Xbox and ID Software teams delivering what appears to be a grand slam. The game’s fantasy theme and fresh weaponry are stunning, leaving fans eager for its release and all the new material it promises. Much like “DOOM (2016)” and “DOOM Eternal“, “DOOM: The Dark Ages” stays true to its roots while venturing into uncharted territory. However, many have been curious about the genesis of this fresh take on DOOM. A recent interview has provided some insight into how “DOOM: The Dark Ages” evolved into its final form and how certain inspirations were drawn from Batman comics such as “Batman Year One“.
Edge Magazine recently released an interview detailing the creation process of DOOM: The Dark Ages. This in-depth discussion explored various design aspects of the game, and even offered players a glimpse into one of the primary influences behind it – an influence that fans found unexpected.
One significant source of inspiration for the game “DOOM: The Dark Ages” was the stories “Batman Year Zero” and “Batman: The Dark Knight“. Our aim was to revisit the origins of the DOOM character, and the direction was significantly influenced by “Batman Year Zero“. The visual style and atmosphere of “DOOM: The Dark Ages” clearly echoes the transformation of Gotham City, blended with a touch of ID Software’s unique style and influence.
In the game “DOOM: The Dark Ages,” the design of DOOM Guy was inspired by the medieval knight, particularly from the character depiction of Batman in “Batman: The Dark Knight.” This is evident in the updated appearance of DOOM Guy, which includes a muscular and imposing figure. Two key elements that reflect this inspiration are the new serrated shield, used for both defense and offense, and the addition of a cape, similar to what Batman wears.
Initially, the preliminary version of “DOOM: The Dark Ages” was known as “Slayer Year One”, but it evolved into the game we know today. Although ideas for “DOOM: The Dark Ages” were initially conceived, development on “DOOM Eternal” had already begun, causing “DOOM: The Dark Ages” to take a backseat in production schedule. The concept of “DOOM: The Dark Ages”, which featured the Sentinals faction, was first imagined in 2016 and later appeared in the rebooted version of “DOOM”.
In a constant effort to maintain the unique essence of the DOOM series while exploring fresh, thrilling directions, ID Software revitalized DOOM in 2016, mirroring the original game. Following this, DOOM Eternal was developed with a focus on reimagining DOOM 2. This creative foundation gave ID Software the liberty to experiment and brought about the birth of DOOM: The Dark Ages.
The video game titled “DOOM: The Dark Ages” is scheduled to come out on May 13th and can be played on the Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. There are whispers of a potential release for Nintendo Switch 2, but neither Microsoft nor Nintendo have confirmed this yet. Pre-orders are available for several editions of “DOOM: The Dark Ages“, priced at $69.99 each.
