How Christopher Reeve’s Wife Dana Saved His Life After Accident

As a devoted fan and admirer of Christopher Reeve, his story of resilience, hope, and love has left an indelible impact on my heart. The seven words that Dana spoke to him, “You’re still you. And I love you,” were not just words; they were a lifeline in the darkest hours.

Seven words changed Christopher Reeve’s world.

Following the tragic equestrian accident in 1995 that left Superman actor paralyzed from the neck down due to a spinal cord injury, it was his wife, Dana Reeve, who provided him with the resilience to persevere.

“Later on, she spoke the phrases that proved crucial for my survival, as Christopher, who passed away in 2004, reminisced in the preview for the upcoming documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. He recounted, ‘You’re still you. And I love you.'”

In 1992, Dana got married, but tragically passed away due to lung cancer two years after her husband. This union resulted in the birth of their son, William Reeve, who is now 32 years old. Interestingly, Christopher, Dana’s husband, had a son named Matthew Reeve, aged 44, and a daughter, Alexandra Reeve Givens, aged 40, with his former partner, Gae Exton.

Three offspring are leading the creation of a fresh documentary chronicling Christopher’s heroic journey, merging historical film clips of their deceased father, who played significant roles both in front of and behind the camera.

Matthew mentions in the preview that spending time with his father was filled with energy and movement, as they enjoyed activities such as bike riding, soccer games, and skiing together.

Alexandra echoed her brother’s feelings, pointing out that their father was quite competitive and he didn’t exactly ease up.

Looking back at his last moment with his father before the accident, Matthew emotionally reflected, “He bid farewell, and he offered that wave. It was the last time I saw him standing.”

The documentary includes talks with celebrities such as Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon, who discuss the special relationship between Christopher and the late actor Robin Williams.

Glenn remarked, “They got along so well because they understood each other deeply,” while Susan added, “Robin faced challenges throughout his life, and I believe they both acknowledged the hardships they encountered.”

The family feels passionately that Christopher’s story of endurance and hope is one worth telling.

In an interview with Variety in January, Will stated that the year 2024 marks the 20th anniversary since our father’s passing. Given this, we decided that if there was ever a chance for us to accomplish this, now would be the optimal moment.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is in theaters Sept. 21.
