How Cobra Kai’s Series Finale Sets Up Karate Kid: Legends Movie

Following six seasons spanning 65 episodes, the popular series “Cobra Kai” has concluded its run. Early Thursday, the final five episodes were released on Netflix, marking the end of a significant part of the larger “Karate Kid” narrative. Yet, fans can rest assured that the “Karate Kid” storyline continues as the upcoming film “Karate Kid: Legends,” set to hit theaters in May, will bring back both “Cobra Kai” and “The Karate Kid” stars like Ralph Macchio, reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso.

In a surprising turn of events, it’s foreseen that Daniel will encounter Mr. Han, the karate instructor from the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid”, portrayed by the legendary Jackie Chan. Together, they are expected to journey to the East Coast and mentor a young Chinese boy in martial arts. The ending of “Cobra Kai” has sparked numerous theories suggesting it might pave the way for “Karate Kid: Legends”. With the finale of the series now unfolding, we finally understand the extent (or lack thereof) to which “Cobra Kai” prepares the ground for a new “Karate Kid” story.

To avoid revealing too much about the ending, let’s discuss instead where the character Daniel from Cobra Kai ends up, as he’s the only main actor confirmed for Karate Kid: Legends so far.

Following the World Tournament, Daniel chooses to carry on with Miyagi-do, maintaining the dojo within Mr. Miyagi’s former residence. On the other hand, Johnny reactivates Cobra Kai. They collaborate frequently, occasionally transferring students between their schools for a well-rounded education in both offensive (Cobra Kai) and defensive (Miyagi-do) techniques. Daniel and Johnny have mended their friendship, and Daniel has come to terms with the significance of karate in his personal life, finding inner peace as a result.

In essence, there’s not much background story established for “Karate Kid: Legends”. However, the finale of “Cobra Kai” leaves Daniel open to embark on a journey with Mr. Han in the film. He has achieved an excellent equilibrium between karate and his personal life, rekindling his love for it. Moreover, he has someone to oversee his dojo if he’s absent, as the students can simply catch up with Cobra Kai for additional training.

Regrettably, Mr. Han isn’t featured in the finale of Cobra Kai, and there’s no scene where Daniel suddenly expresses “I need to visit an old friend.” Although we see a glimpse of Mr. Han in the Miyagi-do dojo asking for Daniel’s assistance in the upcoming Legends trailer, that’s all the interaction they have in this particular season.

Considering Daniel and Johnny’s roles as friends and martial arts mentors, it’s intriguing to speculate whether Johnny might be included in the movie somehow, perhaps even for a brief scene. After all, they often collaborate, and their combined teaching methods significantly enhance their students’ skills. Therefore, having Johnny participate in the training of this new Karate Kid seems plausible, given their history and the unique synergy between them.

Karate Kid: Legends is set to hit theaters on May 30th.
