How Deadpool & Wolverine Pokes Fun at the MCU Multiverse Saga

As a gamer with a lifelong passion for all things Marvel and a soft spot for the quippy Deadpool, I must say that Deadpool & Wolverine has left me both entertained and slightly concerned. On one hand, it’s a delightful nod to the X-Men films of yore and a hilarious jab at the current state of the MCU. The fourth wall breaks and the self-deprecating humor are everything I love about Deadpool. However, the underlying message of creative bankruptcy and revisiting the past feels all too real.

Dark Phoenix in 2019. Essentially, “Deadpool & Wolverine” serves as a farewell to the Fox X-Men series, but it also subtly criticizes the current state of the MCU.

(WARNING SPOILERS FOLLOW!)

The biggest gasp from fans came, when Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) tells Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), “Welcome to the MCU, by the way. You’re joining at a bit of a low point.”

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t just toss one quip at the Marvel Multiverse; they’ve been pointing out the ridiculousness, monotony, and questionable creativity of revisiting old ground. They’re not shy about criticizing the franchise for its repetitive stunt cameos and lack of a solid narrative. The “low point” jab hits hard, considering that Deadpool & Wolverine was supposed to be the game-changer, the film that would revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a series of quality declines. The humor in this is layered and tasty; it’s a clever commentary on expectations and the state of the franchise.

  • Deadpool breaking the fourth wall with an in-universe observation (the MCU getting Wolverine).
  • Ryan Reynolds cracking a joke about Hugh Jackman finally getting a shot in the MCU, after years of fan wishes and hopes.
  • Reynolds and/or Deadpool taking a shot at the MCU for falling off its game.

The humor hit as hard as a nuclear blast, causing a wave of TikTok videos and internet memes based on the intensity of Deadpool’s shade. Many fans believe that “the Merc with the Mouth” devoured it whole, and they can’t get enough!
