As a long-time devotee of cinematic masterpieces and someone who has seen more than their fair share of plot twists, I must say that the departure of Kevin Costner from Yellowstone left me feeling like a cowboy left high and dry in the middle of the Montana wilderness. The news that John Dutton, the iconic character played by Costner, was written out of the show in such an unceremonious way was certainly a blow to many fans, myself included.
Yellowstone resumed for its eagerly awaited second half of Season 5 (which could be its last) on Sunday, yet a significant family member is conspicuously missing from the fresh batch of episodes.
In June, it was officially declared by Kevin Costner that he would not be appearing again on Yellowstone, choosing not to reprise his beloved character John Dutton.
Despite the sad news that Kevin Costner is leaving the series, fans had held on to the hope for a satisfying conclusion for his character. However, some spectators were left dismayed as the character’s departure from the show seemed abrupt and lacking in proper closure.
Learn how Yellowstone wrapped up the departure of its main character, John Dutton, in season 5 part 2. Discover the reasons behind Kevin Costner’s decision to leave the series and uncover all the details surrounding his exit from the show.

How did Kevin Costner leave Yellowstone? John Dutton exit explained
John Dutton is killed off in the opening episode of season 5 part 2.
Although his face remains hidden, a lifeless body was discovered at the governor’s residence, lying near a firearm, with blood and internal organs splattered on the surrounding walls.
Initially, it seemed like John had committed suicide, but later it was uncovered that his death was actually orchestrated in a murder-for-hire scheme by Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri), the girlfriend of Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), John’s estranged brother in the Dutton family, who staged the scene to make it seem like John had taken his own life.
Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, swears to take revenge on Jamie whenever the opportunity arises.
Why did Yellowstone kill John Dutton off?
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Yellowstone’s executive producer, Christina Voros, praised Sheridan for his daring choice to write off the character, describing it as “remarkably courageous.
She remarked: “She expressed that it speaks volumes about his confidence in the characters and the performers who portray them, when he stated, ‘Let’s not focus on the incident. Instead, let’s explore how these individuals live in the aftermath.’ This aspect was more captivating to [Taylor] than the event itself.
She continued: “Death and birth are the two constants in our human experience. They are the most pivotal moments in our lives, and yet they are the most pedestrian elements of being a human being.
It’s the impact of birth and death on us as individuals that makes them fascinating, rather than the events themselves.
In my opinion, the main reason for structuring the tale in this manner was to create a sense of intrigue. Essentially, he’s curious about how others manage and what they do. It’s in these questions that the mystery lies, it’s where the unraveling happens, and ultimately, it’s where the story unfolds.
Why did Kevin Costner leave Yellowstone?
In early 2023, whispers began that Kevin Costner might depart from the series. Shortly after, it was reported that there may have been tension between the actor and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan.
It was revealed in February 2023 that a disagreement between the pair arose due to scheduling issues. Specifically, it was claimed that following the fifth season’s division into two halves, the actor expressed reluctance to film for more than one week during the second half of season 5 and the network declined his suggested schedule.
These claims were denied by Costner’s attorney, Martin Singer, who told Puck.News: “The idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of season 5 of Yellowstone is an absolute lie. It’s ridiculous — and anyone suggesting it shouldn’t be believed for one second.”
Costner likewise refuted the allegations, stating to TODAY.com in May that he upheld the “integrity of the contract” and asserting that he didn’t shoot season 5 part 2 because there wasn’t a script available.
Filming conflicted with Kevin Costner’s plan to direct his first film in twenty years, “An American Saga”, which is also the initial part of a four-film Western series he had planned.
Kevin Costner publicly announced in a June 2024 Instagram video that he wouldn’t be part of the second half of Season 5, stating: “I wanted to let you know after this year and a half of working on Horizon and taking care of all that entails, plus considering Yellowstone – that cherished series we both adore – I’ve come to understand that I won’t be able to join Season 5B or the future episodes.
He added: “It significantly impacted me and I took a strong liking to it. I believe you felt the same way. Just wanted to inform you that I won’t be coming back, but I cherish the bond we’ve built and I look forward to seeing you at the cinema.
During an interview a day after the video’s launch, Costner shared with USA TODAY his wish to reappear in season 5 part 2, but eventually found himself weary from waiting for the opportunity.
Instead, he expressed: “Perhaps what I had anticipated wasn’t meant to be. I no longer wish to repeatedly express optimism about achieving it. The reality seems to have moved beyond what I initially thought possible.
