Logan, released in 2017, was a poignant conclusion to Jackman’s two-decade tenure as the adamantium-clawed mutant. The film’s gritty and darker tone felt like the perfect end for Wolverine, who had spent years wrestling with his inner demons and his identity as both a monster and a hero.
In the year 2017, Hugh Jackman, who had portrayed Wolverine in eight Marvel films over nearly two decades, chose to say goodbye to this iconic character in his last solo movie, titled Logan. For Jackman, the raw and gloomy portrayal of Wolverine seemed like the ideal conclusion to his acting tenure with this beloved character. However, in 2022, Ryan Reynolds reached out with an intriguing proposition.
Jackman is coming back for the third installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, where he’ll encounter his longtime foe, Wade Wilson, who made an appearance in X-Men: Origins – Wolverine, albeit a different version. However, there’s a hitch: In Logan, Wolverine met his end.
In its final moments, the weary and injured Wolverine, who had long struggled with his inner demons of monstrosity versus heroism, met a tragic yet poignant end. Logan’s story came to an end as he fought valiantly, holding hands with his daughter Laura (Dafne Keen).

How did Wolverine die in Logan?
As a longtime fan of Wolverine and the X-Men franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness and respect when I think about his final moments in “Logan.” I’ve followed Wolverine’s journey through numerous films, comic books, and animated series, and his death felt earned and poignant.
In the movie “Logan,” Wolverine learns that he fathered a child, Laura, who possesses mutant powers similar to his own. This girl was engineered by Transigen using Wolverine’s DNA. For the past 25 years, no mutants have been born naturally. As an aging Wolverine grapples with the decline of his healing abilities, he is hesitant to assist Laura in her struggles.
When Laura’s life and those of other mutant kids, who have undergone experiments, are in danger and being pursued, he puts himself in harm’s way to shield them, including his own daughter.
Due to an overwhelming number of gunshot wounds, Logan’s healing powers are struggling to keep up, hindering his recovery process. It appears that he might have the upper hand against the remaining gunmen, but their surprise weapon, a clone of Logan named X-24, who has already taken down Charles Xavier, poses a formidable threat.
Laura puts up a fierce struggle against the mindless clone powered by the super-serum, while Logan is wounded by a bullet through his thigh. The strength of X-24 proves too much for Laura, as he overpowers her. However, the mutant children join the fight and manage to pin down the ragged clone under a passing truck.
In that instant, it seems like they’ve prevailed. Amidst the chaos, Logan shouts at the kids to flee as X-23 emerges from under the overturned vehicle. The two clash, but before long, X-23 seizes Logan and stabs him with a wooden stake from a shattered tree, piercing his abdomen. With no possibility of recovery, X-23 relentlessly assaults Logan. However, Laura intercedes, firing an adamantium bullet into X-23’s head.
I make an effort to release Logan from my grasp, lowering him to the ground below, but unfortunately, he’s lost an excessive amount of blood and spends his last moments with his daughter instead. For those who may question the authenticity of Logan’s demise, the film conclusively confirms it by ending on his grave, marked with a distinct X over the pile of stones.
How could Wolverine return in Deadpool 3?
Based on my understanding of the comic book universe, I’ve always been a big fan of Wolverine’s character and his numerous appearances in various stories. So, when I heard that Logan’s Wolverine was definitively dead, I was taken aback, feeling a pang of sadness for the loss of such an iconic hero. However, with the recent release of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” my curiosity has been piqued – could this be a new variant of Wolverine, or perhaps a resurrection of the old one?
In Deadpool 2, Wade Wilson traveled back in time to prevent Vanessa from getting fatally wounded. This raises the question if he could use this ability to travel before the events of Logan, when Wolverine was still alive, resulting in a changed timeline for Deadpool and Wolverine.
After the last trailer, it appears that the Wolverine Deadpool interacts with is a version from an alternate timeline. In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Wade enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) appear at his doorstep.
In Loki’s show, the TVA safeguard the sacrosanct timeline while possessing the ability to traverse not just time but also different universes through their TemPads. With Deadpool now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s an intriguing opportunity for Wade to explore the multiverse as well – given that Marvel is currently immersed in their Multiverse Storyline of films and shows.
As a movie enthusiast, I can imagine this scenario: In an intriguing twist, the masked vigilante could team up with an alternate version of Wolverine from another timeline. This encounter wouldn’t change the storyline of Logan, but it would significantly alter the character development that fans have come to know from the X-Men movies, creating a whole new perspective on Wolverine’s journey.
As a long-time comic book fan, I’m thrilled to hear that Logan, aka Wolverine, is set to appear in Deadpool once again. But let me tell you, my excitement is tinged with a hint of curiosity. You see, I’ve been following Wolverine’s story for decades now, and I’ve grown attached to the character over the years.
