How does Harrison Ford’s face look so real in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle? We asked the developers

As a devoted fan of Indiana Jones, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by the revelation that Harrison Ford did not provide the voice for our favorite archaeologist in the upcoming game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, upon learning about the meticulous process MachineGames undertook to recreate Ford’s likeness using archived assets from the 1980s movies, my admiration for their dedication only grew.

If you’ve watched the previews for the forthcoming Indiana Jones video game titled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, it’s clear that the game character bears a striking resemblance to Harrison Ford as portrayed in the movies.

In this game, set between Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and The Last Crusade (1989), featuring Indiana Jones, you primarily experience the action from a first-person viewpoint. However, at certain instances, you get to see Indy’s face, which without a doubt belongs to Harrison Ford.

In fact, it’s been verified that Ford didn’t perform as Indy in the game; instead, Troy Baker, known from The Last of Us, handled the voiceovers.

During the latest virtual sneak peek of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I found myself curious to know the secrets behind their impressive digital magic-making, so I reached out to the talented team at MachineGames.

As a seasoned movie critic, I hypothesized that they may have partnered with the Lucasfilm studio, now under the wings of Disney, who likely possessed high-resolution scans of our beloved Harrison Ford from their latest Star Wars production.

In the film titled “The Dial of Destiny,” there was an impressive scene where Harrison Ford appeared noticeably younger due to digital age reduction techniques.

At the gathering, I inquired about this specific topic. Could it be possible for Lucasfilm to grant MachineGames permission to utilize their digital version of Ford from the latest movie, for sharing of resources?

Axel Torvenius, the creative director of The Great Circle, explained to me: “Actually, things didn’t unfold like that in our interpretation.”

We’ve mostly been using scanning technology on our principal actors. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to go back in time and scan a younger version of Harrison Ford.

“Instead, we’ve been diligently examining the classic film content following extensive effort and study.”

Torvenius clarified that the developers managed to obtain old photograph series from the ’80s, which were essentially like rotating photosets of the era.

He stressed that it was “important to us to make sure that we portray and capture Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford, at that time, just after Raiders”.

“So it’s work that has been developed here at MachineGames.”

Instead of stating that Lucasfilm shared the de-aged Ford from the recent movie, it would be more accurate to say that Lucasfilm shared photo sets and other assets from the 1980s movies, which enabled the team at MachineGames to create their own version of Ford using resources appropriate for the correct time period.

Game director Jerk Gustafsson explained their choice to establish the game’s timeline following Raiders by stating: “Indeed, a significant portion of our narrative is about carrying forward the beloved storyline from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. We wanted to build on that.”

He mentioned: “The game depicts Indiana Jones as a continuation directly following Raiders of the Lost Ark. Consequently, the Indiana Jones character in the game is identical to the one viewers encountered in Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Well, it certainly looks like him! We’ll bring you more coverage on the game as its launch nears.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will launch on PC and Xbox Series X/S later in 2024.

You have the option to purchase your copy from stores like GAME, or else, you can expect it to be available on Xbox Game Pass the same day of release.
