The creators of the Halo series have contributed their expertise to enhance the gunplay in The Outer Worlds 2. Microsoft, owner of numerous video game studios including homegrown ones like 343 Industries (now called Halo Studios) and The Coalition, as well as purchased ones such as Ninja Theory and Bethesda, has been on a significant acquisition spree over the past decade in what can be likened to an arms race with Sony. This buying frenzy was driven by the strong first-party lineup of PlayStation during the PS4 generation, which highlighted the gap between the two consoles, leading Microsoft to seek out established talent with popular franchises.
Among its shrewd acquisitions was Obsidian Entertainment, a renowned RPG developer famous for titles such as “Fallout: New Vegas” and “Pillars of Eternity.” This studio was the perfect size for acquisition – not too large to stir up resentment, but substantial enough to pique interest in Xbox’s first-party objectives. Obsidian recently released “Avowed” earlier this year, which garnered positive reviews from both fans and critics, being hailed as a suitable companion to series like The Elder Scrolls. Now, the studio is preparing for the fall launch of “The Outer Worlds 2.”
The Outer Worlds 2‘s Combat Was Improved by Halo Studios

In 2019, “The Outer Worlds” emerged as an engaging mid-sized role-playing game that offered a captivating experience without requiring an extensive investment of time, roughly equating to a couple of weeks’ worth of playtime. The game boasted a witty tone, impressive narrative, and an intriguing world to delve into, sparking anticipation for a possible sequel. However, the combat mechanics were somewhat predictable, which deviates from Obsidian’s traditional strengths. For “The Outer Worlds 2,” Obsidian collaborated with their colleagues at other Xbox studios to enhance the gameplay experience.
Game director Brandon Adler revealed to The Guardian (as reported by Rebs Gaming on Twitter) that they drew inspiration from other shooting games to enhance their gunplay, going as far as consulting with the team at Halo Studios who gave valuable suggestions on improving the game. Alyssa Mercante of The Guardian acknowledged the marked improvement in the game’s combat, emphasizing that this change was significant and noticeable.
In simpler terms, Adler shared, “We thoroughly analyzed Destiny since we really enjoyed its vibe. We also had discussions with the Halo team… They provided us with a massive checklist of items and suggested, ‘You should focus on these areas… You should consider incorporating those changes in your weapon settings.’
It appears that The Outer Worlds 2 might prove to be an exciting addition to the gaming scene in 2025, bolstering an already robust lineup for Xbox. Given its $80 price tag, it’s crucial for it to deliver a strong performance. If the combat mechanics are refined, it could potentially rank among the top shooters or RPGs of the year. The original game was quite impressive in other areas, so there is high anticipation for this sequel. For now, opinions remain divided, but it’s encouraging to see Obsidian leveraging its skills under the broad support of a powerful brand like Xbox.
The Outer Worlds 2 will release for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC on October 29th, 2025.
