How Human Remains Found in Georgia Pond May Link to 44-Year-Old Case

As a dedicated follower of cold cases and a firm believer in justice, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing the news about the potential recovery of remains related to the 1980 disappearance of Catherine and Charles Romer. Having spent countless hours researching and discussing such mysteries, this case has always been one that piqued my interest due to its intrigue and lack of resolution for over four decades.

Answers 40 years in the making might be just around the corner.

Law enforcement officials in Glynn County, Georgia, announced the discovery of human remains found inside a submerged vehicle that may be connected to a missing persons case from 1980 involving Catherine Romer and Charles Romer, a couple who vanished while driving back to New York from Florida.

On a chilly November day, I, an ardent sleuth of unsolved mysteries, could hardly contain my excitement as I read the latest update on a case that had haunted me for years. The Sunshine State Sonar Team from Florida had made a remarkable discovery – a vehicle, strikingly similar to the one Charles and Catherine Romer were last seen driving when they vanished in April 1980. This Lincoln Continental was submerged in a pond, and investigators, armed with determination and the help of the Camden County Dive Team, had found a single human bone within it. The pond is now being drained, holding its breath in anticipation of any additional remains that may surface. The hunt for answers continues…

The department noted that at this time, there is no conclusion made to the identity of the remains.

In simpler terms, the company known as Sunshine State Sonar, who found the car according to the police, also provided details about the recovery. They stated that their work “ultimately led to the uncovering of a submerged vehicle holding two sets of skeletal remains.

The findings connect these remains to an unsolved 44-year-old mystery,” the statement went on. “For now, we cannot reveal the identities of those involved or provide further details. The inquiry is still active and ongoing. Our thoughts go out to the affected families during this challenging period.

In April of 1980, Charles, aged 73, and Catherine, aged 75, went unaccounted for on their journey back to New York from Miami Beach, as per NBC Miami’s report. This was following a stop in Brunswick, Georgia. Employees at the Holiday Inn (now known as the Royal Inn) raised the alarm when they noticed that the couple had not used their bed.

Back in ’85, I stumbled upon an article from The New York Times that revealed quite a find in the missing couple’s room – glasses, a bottle of Scotch, and even their tax returns! Despite a thorough search after their vanishing act, their car remained elusive.

NBC News reports that authorities believed there may have been suspicious circumstances surrounding the couple’s vanishing, given that Catherine was seen with around $81,000 worth of jewelry on her person.

Five years since his vanishing, Charles was legally declared deceased under New York State regulations, as reported by The New York Times. In a 1985 article following the ruling, one of Charles’ two sons, Charles R. Romer Jr., expressed his commitment to uncovering the truth about his father’s fate.

“We just don’t have any leads right now at all,” he said at the time, expressing his intention to visit Georgia annually to pursue answers. “I’ll never give up on it. I’ll always try to find out what happened.”
