As a die-hard fan and ardent follower of Joey King’s career, I can confidently say that her creativity and uniqueness shine even when it comes to picking out thoughtful gifts for her beloved husband Steven Piet on their first anniversary. The fact that she chose a newspaper from the day he was born speaks volumes about their shared sense of humor and their deep connection with each other’s past.
Joey King was mulling over ideas for Steven Piet’s first anniversary present, not at the kissing booth.
Actually, for their first-year anniversary, also known as the “paper anniversary,” the stars of the show “Uglies” decided to get quite imaginative. This is a time when couples usually swap gifts made from paper, symbolizing one year of matrimony.
“Joey shared with TopMob News that he discovered a newspaper dated a year after his husband’s birth. He finds it quite fascinating.”
Although the title was quite unusual, the 25-year-old felt it accurately captured her and Steven’s distinct sense of humor.

In September 2023, Joey (age 40) and Steven tied the knot in a private ceremony held in Mallorca, Spain. They originally met while working on the television show “The Act” from 2019. During this production, Joey portrayed “Gypsy Rose Blanchard,” while Steven directed two episodes of the limited series.
During the production of the Netflix movie “Uglies“, even though Steven wasn’t part of the film, he was a common presence. As Joey and her co-star Brianne Tju shared with TopMob News, they frequently invited Steven to their post-work gatherings.
Joey jokingly remarked, “We had quite a few ‘ladies’ nights,'” referring to memories of Brianne entering their room in the mornings, still feeling the effects of the previous night.
She continued, “We had a lot of memories—so many memories and so much fun.”
Brianne added, “I just jumped in like, ‘Hi, mom and dad! Hang out with me, I’m bored!'”
Additionally featuring Chase Stokes, Laverne Cox, and Keith Powers, “Uglies” presents a fictional world where everyone is considered “ugly” until they undergo drastic beauty procedures. This series is adapted from Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel of the same title, which marks the beginning of his “Uglies” book series that includes “Pretties,” “Specials,” and “Extras.”
“Joey adored those books as a child, and they’ve remained a part of him ever since. He was eleven when he first encountered them.”
Uglies is available to steam on Netflix Sept. 13.
