As a long-time Marvel fan who’s been following the lore since the days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, I must say that the inclusion of Knull in Venom: The Last Dance has me more excited than a kid on Christmas morning! The connection between Knull and Thor, one of my all-time favorite characters, is just mind-blowing. It’s like finding out that your favorite childhood toy was actually made by the same genius who created your dream car!
Introducing Knull in the film “Venom: The Last Dance” might have significant implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, the last trailer suggests a villain resembling Knull may appear in the upcoming third installment of Sony Pictures’ Venom series. Knull is a relatively new character within the Marvel Universe, but his origin story traces back to its early phases and also connects with some well-known superheroes. If indeed Knull features in “Venom: The Last Dance“, it could potentially foster more collaboration between Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and the MCU.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the thrilling introduction of Knull in Venom #4 back in 2018, a menacing figure skillfully crafted by Ryan Stegman and Donny Cates during their series relaunch. Nicknamed “The King in Black,” this ominous presence lurked in the shadows, gradually revealing his power until he reached his peak in the epic event series, King in Black. This climactic battle saw Eddie Brock and Venom overcoming Knull, a feat that earned them the title of “The King in Black.
Knull’s connection to Thor explained
In the acclaimed series penned by Jason Aaron, the character Thor initially encountered Gorr the Godslayer, who serves as the main antagonist in Thor: Love and Thunder. Unlike Thor’s trusty Mjolnir, Gorr wielded All-Black the Necrosword – a weapon of living darkness that mirrored symbiotes in its flow and behavior. It seemed as if Gorr and the Necrosword were inseparable, but it was revealed later on that the Necrosword warped Gorr, contributing to his descent into evil by fueling his desire to eliminate all deities.
In our previous discussions, we mentioned that the Necrosword shared some characteristics with a symbiote. Here’s an interesting twist: The Necrosword is, in fact, a symbiote! This revelation stems from Donny Cates, one of Knull’s co-creators, being impressed by Jason Aaron’s work on Thor. When it came to delving into Knull’s origin, he ingeniously linked it to Thor’s story. Knull fashioned All-Black the Necrosword to decapitate a Celestial, which later turned into Knowhere, a location familiar from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. This means that not only did Thor face off against Gorr, but he also had to deal with his living symbiote sword.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Necrosword has been featured, but not associated with Christian Bale’s character Gorr the God Butcher. Instead, it was wielded by Cate Blanchett’s Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. It is yet undetermined whether Knull will carry a Necrosword in Venom: The Last Dance.
Will Knull show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The cinematic world created by Sony around Spider-Man hasn’t quite matched the fame of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) yet. So far, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man hasn’t made an appearance in films like Venom, Morbius, or Madame Web. Instead, Sony is concentrating on constructing a connected universe centered around Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, primarily focusing on his adversaries. Nevertheless, there have been some minor collaborations between the two studios.
For example, Michael Keaton’s Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming made a cameo appearance in Morbius, as they plotted a potential team-up against Spider-Man. Also, the post-credits scenes in Venom: Let There Be Carnage transported Venom to the MCU just in time to see Peter Parker exposed as Spider-Man to the entire world in Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s post-credits scene. This was followed up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Venom sent back to his world and a piece of the Venom symbiote left behind in the MCU.
It’s clear that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are eager for a battle between Thor and Knull, but the possibility of such an event happening is rather small at this point in time. Given Sony’s focus on integrating Spider-Man into their universe before delving into other details, it seems reasonable to assume we should see Spider-Man versus Venom before considering a larger crossover involving Knull.
