How Marvel's Avengers Assemble Squad Teases the MCU's New Avengers

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with over two decades of comic book history under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest iteration of Avengers Assemble is a thrilling leap forward for the franchise. The synergy between the comics and the MCU is more evident than ever, and it’s exciting to see characters like Shang-Chi and She-Hulk stepping into the spotlight.

The Avengers teamed up! In 2012, Marvel Comics debuted the series “Avengers Assemble” alongside the blockbuster movie “The Avengers” from Marvel Studios. This 25-issue comic was designed as a starting point for new readers and followed the Marvel Comics continuity, but its characters were inspired by the film: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk. In a move that complemented the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stark Tower was rebuilt as the new Avengers Tower, and Earth’s strongest heroes confronted the cosmic despot Thanos (introduced in the movie’s post-credits scene as Loki’s patron, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston).

As a diehard fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating this week’s issue #1 of “Avengers Assemble” by Steve Orlando, who has previously worked on “Scarlet Witch,” and the talented artist Cory Smith known for his work on “Wolverine.” This isn’t just another volume; it’s the kick-off to a five-issue arc. The focus here is on the AVENG.E.R.S., or the Avengers Emergency Response Squad, under the leadership of none other than Steve Rogers.

As a gamer, I find myself part of an elite team under the A.E.R.S., stationed at Avengers Mansion. We’re called upon to tackle crises worldwide, from battling Sin and the Serpent Society (anticipated in 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World) to facing off against the demon Mephisto, rumored to make an appearance in Marvel Television’s Ironheart. We also encounter the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes, the latest vampire-hunting Nightstalkers, and the ever-menacing Doctor Doom, who is set to be the main antagonist in a 2025 crossover event preceding Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Victor Von Doom in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Instead of the main Avengers team consisting of Captain America (Sam Wilson), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor, Black Panther (T’Challa), Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), Vision, and Storm from the X-Men, the A.E.R.S. team gathers lesser-known superheroes such as Lightspeed, Night Thrasher, and Lightning, along with characters who have recently made their MCU debut.

The show Avengers Assemble features Monica Rambeau aka Photon (known as Teyonah Parris in The Marvels), Shang-Chi (portrayed by Simu Liu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner, appearing in Hawkeye), Hercules (Brett Goldstein, seen in Thor: Love and Thunder), and Wonder Man (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II from the upcoming Disney+’s series Wonder Man)).

Following the incidents in Avengers: Endgame from 2019, the original Avengers team has disbanded. Potential new members for this team could be Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Black Panther (Letitia Wright). Additionally, rumors suggest that Photon, Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, and Wonder Man might also join the Avengers in the upcoming film, Avengers 5, which is said to gather over 60 characters.

Under the guidance of Anthony and Joe Russo, the movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to hit theaters on May 1st, 2026. This will be followed by another film entitled “Avengers: Secret Wars“, which is set to premiere on May 7th, 2027.
