As a lifelong fan of both horror and cartoons, I must say that the crossover between Count Orlok from Nosferatu and Spongebob Squarepants is one of the most unexpected and delightful combinations I’ve ever witnessed. While it’s amusing to see Orlok in Bikini Bottom, it’s a bit disappointing that he goes by the name “Nosferatu” instead of his actual title, Count Orlok. But hey, who doesn’t love a good pun?
This Yuletide, I find myself among a throng of enthusiasts eagerly anticipating a chilling holiday experience. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, recently acclaimed by critics as one of the master director’s finest works, is not a novelty in the realm of Count Orlok. He first graced our screens in the 1922 silent film bearing his name and made an unexpected appearance on Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants. Orlok has since revisited Bikini Bottom quite frequently.
Interestingly enough, during a recent conversation with Robert Eggers, the director of Nosferatu, The Hollywood Reporter inquired whether he was familiar with this unusual collaboration. Surprisingly, Eggers was not only aware but eager to explore the opportunity since it marked the vampire’s first on-screen appearance for many viewers, “I’ve heard about it! You know what, a cartoon show called Muppet Babies used to air clips from Phantom of The Opera. That show exposed me to a variety of odd films, so I owe you one, Spongebob Squarepants!

What’s The Big Spongebob Lie?
In the world of SpongeBob SquarePants, the ominous figure known as Orlok is consistently called “Nosferatu.” However, it’s essential to clarify that Count Orlok isn’t the character’s actual name; instead, “Nosferatu” denotes a type of vampire. Though saying “Count Orlok” may not sound as catchy, we can overlook this minor discrepancy given the charm of the animated series. Despite Orlok in Bikini Bottom not exhibiting the violent behaviors typical of Count Orlok, I’m willing to forgive this creative liberty.
There’s still no word from Universal or Paramount about Bill Skarsgard potentially visiting Bikini Bottom to reprise the role of Nosferatu in Eggers’ adaptation, which is set to release on Christmas Day. Given that SpongeBob SquarePants is turning 25 this year and continues to generate spin-offs, movies, and merchandise, there could be numerous chances for the vampire character to resurface from his coffin in the future.
Nosferatu The Younger Years
Interestingly, you might find it amusing to know that Orlok, the character from Nosferatu, has shown up in the prequel series, Kamp Koral: Spongebob’s Under Years. In this series, Orlok is depicted as a much younger version of the typical character we’re familiar with. He goes by the name “Kidferatu” here, and despite his young age, he still remains a supernatural being. Yet, there’s no clear answer as to why or how he ended up in the deep ocean.
Should you be seeking a more chilling portrayal of Count Orlok, take heart, for there’s no shortage of films and series that have delved deeper into the vampire’s terrifying essence. A reimagining of the 1922 film surfaced in 1977, while ‘Shadow Of The Vampire’ from 2000 cleverly blends fact and fiction to offer a fresh perspective on Orlok. Furthermore, various projects have introduced vampires bearing a striking resemblance to the Count, such as ‘Are You Afraid Of The Dark’, ‘Salem’s Lot’, and ‘Vampire: The Masquerade’.
